The NHSD36E is a 36 inch high-speed twist drill bit, so it reaches through multiple framing members or deep into a joist bay from a single position, which is why electricians use bits in this length class for fishing cable. The second figure in its designation, 2-1/2 inches, is the other dimension given for the bit. Length is what you are buying here: a standard jobber bit will not cross a stud bay.

The NHSD36E is a twist drill bit, not a self-feed or auger bit, so it cuts slower and with less bite but puts far less torque strain on the tool than an aggressive auger of the same diameter.
