Ideal Industries 74-046 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Which IDEAL aluminum conduit bender do I need for 1/2 inch EMT versus 3/4 inch EMT?
IDEAL Industries' aluminum hand bender comes in two trade sizes: order 74-046 for 1/2 inch EMT and 74-047 for 3/4 inch EMT. Benders are sized to one conduit trade size, so pick the head that matches the conduit you are running. If you bend both sizes on the job, you need both heads.
2) Can this bender handle rigid or IMC conduit, or is it EMT only?
IDEAL's aluminum bender line covers rigid and IMC as well as EMT, one trade size step down: the 3/4 inch EMT head also takes 1/2 inch rigid and 1/2 inch IMC. Rigid and IMC have a larger outside diameter than EMT of the same trade size, which is why the shoe groove that fits 3/4 EMT also fits 1/2 rigid.
3) Will a 3/4 inch EMT bender work on 1/2 inch EMT if I just use it carefully?
No. Run 1/2 inch EMT in a 3/4 inch shoe and the conduit kinks or flattens because it is not supported across the groove, and your take-up marks will be wrong. Use 74-046 for 1/2 inch EMT and keep 74-047 for 3/4 inch.
4) Does the IDEAL aluminum bender come with a handle, or do I have to buy one separately?
The handle is included. These are sold as a complete aluminum bender with handle, so there is no separate pipe handle to source before you can start bending.
5) Aluminum or cast iron conduit bender for daily electrical work?
Aluminum is the lighter choice and it is what most electricians carry up a ladder or into a ceiling all day. IDEAL's aluminum head is built for everyday use, with reinforcement at the stress points where a bender head normally cracks. Cast iron heads are heavier and tend to be chosen for heavy repetitive shop bending rather than service work where weight in the hand matters.
6) I am buying benders for a crew truck stock. Which two sizes cover most branch circuit work?
For MRO and branch circuit work, 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch EMT cover the great majority of runs, and those are exactly the two trade sizes offered here: 74-046 and 74-047. Stocking both, with handles already fitted, lets a crew bend offsets, stub-ups and saddles without waiting on a second tool.
