Sta-Kon RAT863 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the Sta-Kon RAT863 ring terminal accept?
The RAT863 is sized for 22-18 AWG stranded copper conductors. The red insulation is the standard color code for that range, so a bin of these is easy to tell apart from the blue 16-14 and yellow 12-10 terminals on the same bench. Run anything heavier than 18 AWG and the barrel will not crimp down properly, so step up to the next size terminal instead.
2) Will the RAT863 ring terminal fit a 1/4 inch stud or screw?
Yes. The RAT863 is built with a 1/4 inch ring tongue, so it lands on a 1/4-20 stud, a 1/4 inch terminal block screw, or a 1/4 inch bolt on a bus bar or ground lug. It will also drop over anything smaller, like a #10 screw, though the extra clearance means you want a washer under the nut to keep the ring from shifting.
3) What voltage is the Sta-Kon RAT863 rated for?
600 V. That covers standard commercial control wiring, panel and motor control terminations, and 120/208 or 277/480 V equipment leads. It is a UL recognized component under file E9809.
4) Why choose a fluoropolymer insulated ring terminal instead of a standard vinyl or nylon one?
Fluoropolymer insulation is what you specify when the termination sees high heat, oil, solvents, or chemical exposure that would soften or crack vinyl. Typical calls are engine and boiler rooms, process equipment, and high-temperature appliance or lighting ballast wiring. For ordinary dry interior control panel work at room temperature, a vinyl or nylon insulated ring terminal in the same 22-18 AWG and 1/4 inch stud size does the same mechanical job.
5) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork terminal on my 1/4 inch terminal screws?
A ring terminal like the RAT863 is the closed-tongue choice: the screw has to come all the way out to remove it, which is exactly why inspectors and most equipment specs want rings on grounds, battery studs, and anything subject to vibration. A fork or spade terminal slides out from under a loosened screw, which is faster for panel service but can back out under vibration. If the connection is a ground or a stud you cannot fully remove, use the ring.
6) Do I need a special crimp tool for the Sta-Kon RAT863?
These are crimp-on terminals, not solder or screw-type, so you need a controlled-cycle crimper with the 22-18 AWG nest (the red die position on most insulated terminal tools). Pliers or an uncalibrated tool will give you a loose barrel that heats under load. The terminal itself is copper, so it is intended for copper conductors only.
7) Is the Sta-Kon RAT863 made in the USA for Buy American jobs?
Country of origin on the RAT863 is the United States, which is what government, military, and federally funded institutional projects ask for on domestic-preference submittals. The part number to list on the submittal is RAT863.
