Sta-Kon RA484 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What stud or screw size does the Sta-Kon RA484 ring terminal fit?
The RA484 is built for a No. 6 stud, so it drops over a #6 screw or terminal post. If your terminal block or ground screw is a #8 or #10, this tongue won't go over it and you need a larger ring size.
2) Can I use the Sta-Kon RA484 terminal on a 480V control circuit?
Yes. The RA484 nylon insulated ring terminal is rated 600 V, which covers 120V, 277V and 480V control and power terminations.
3) Is the Sta-Kon RA484 ring terminal UL recognized?
It carries UL file E9809. That matters for panel work and inspected installs where terminations have to be a listed component.
4) What is the Sta-Kon RA484 terminal barrel made of, and will it work on aluminum conductors?
The barrel is copper with a nylon insulating sleeve, so it is for copper conductors only. Terminating aluminum wire in a copper-only barrel invites galvanic corrosion and a hot joint; use a terminal marked AL/CU or AL for aluminum.
5) What is the difference between a rectangular ring terminal like the Sta-Kon RA484 and a spade or fork terminal?
A rectangular ring tongue is closed, so the conductor cannot pull off the stud if the nut backs off slightly. A fork or spade tongue is open and slides out sideways, which is faster to service but not acceptable where vibration or a code requirement calls for a captive connection. Pick the RA484 style ring for motor leads, grounds and anything that moves; pick a fork where you expect to pull the wire often.
6) Why is the Sta-Kon RA484 red, and does the color mean anything?
Red is the insulation color on this terminal. On insulated crimp terminals the sleeve color identifies the wire range the barrel is sized for, so crews use it to sort terminals on the bench and to match the right crimp die nest without reading the stamp.
7) Is the Sta-Kon RA484 terminal made in the USA?
Country of origin is the United States, which is what government, transit and other Buy American jobs typically need documented on electrical components.
8) Do I need a special crimp tool for the Sta-Kon RA484 insulated ring terminal?
It is a crimp terminal, not a solder or screw type, so it needs an insulated-terminal crimper with the correct die nest for the barrel. A general purpose pliers-style crimper will deform the nylon sleeve and under-form the barrel, which is the usual cause of a termination that reads fine cold and fails under load.
