Sta-Kon RBC793Y – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What stud or bolt size does the Sta-Kon RBC793Y ring terminal fit?
The RBC793Y is built for a 3/8 inch stud. The ring tongue slips over a 3/8 inch bolt, screw or terminal post, so it works on battery posts, bus bar studs, motor terminal blocks and ground studs of that size. A ring tongue has to be removed over the end of the stud rather than slid in sideways, so if you need to drop the lug in without pulling the nut all the way off, use a block spade terminal instead.
2) Is the Sta-Kon RBC793Y ring terminal UL recognized for panel and control work?
It carries UL E9809 and CSA 4503. That covers the inspection question on both sides of the border for panel builds, control cabinets and equipment grounding terminations where an inspector wants a listed connector on the conductor.
3) What is the insulation on the RBC793Y terminal made of, and does it hold up in a hot enclosure?
The insulating sleeve is nylon rather than vinyl. Nylon resists cracking and splitting when the barrel is crimped and takes more abuse from heat and solvents than a vinyl barrel, which is why it is the usual pick for automotive, motor connection and industrial control panel terminations. The barrel is a heavy-duty ring terminal design.
4) Do I need a special crimper for the nylon insulated RBC793Y ring terminal, or will a standard tool work?
Use an insulated-terminal crimper, not a bare-lug die. Nylon insulated barrels like this one need a crimp die matched to the insulated barrel so the nylon sleeve is compressed over the conductor without being split; a cutting or bare-terminal die will shear the nylon and leave the barrel unsupported. Match the die to the color band on the tool.
5) Is the Sta-Kon RBC793Y made in the USA? I have a domestic-sourcing requirement on the job.
Country of origin on the RBC793Y is the United States. That is the detail government, institutional and utility buyers working under domestic-preference language usually need in writing before a terminal gets approved on a submittal.
6) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork terminal on a 3/8 inch motor or ground stud?
A ring tongue, like the RBC793Y at 3/8 inch, is the right call anywhere vibration or a safety ground is involved: the closed tongue is captured by the nut and cannot back out if the hardware loosens. A fork or spade tongue is open, so it can be slid under a loosened screw head for faster service work on terminal strips, but it is not the choice for a grounding connection or a stud that sees movement.
7) Why is the Sta-Kon RBC793Y yellow, and does the color tell me anything on the job?
The sleeve is yellow. On insulated terminals the color is the trade's shorthand for which conductor range the barrel is sized to, so crews standardize on it to keep the right lug with the right wire during a panel build or a harness run and to spot a mis-crimped termination at a glance during inspection.
