Sta-Kon RC363 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RC363 ring terminal take?
The RC363 is sized for 12 to 10 AWG conductors, which is the yellow color code on nylon insulated terminals. If you are terminating 16-14 AWG, you need the blue barrel size instead, and 22-16 AWG takes red. Crimping 14 AWG into a yellow 12-10 barrel will not hold a reliable mechanical connection.
2) What stud or screw size does the RC363 ring fit?
The ring tongue on the RC363 is drilled for a No. 10 stud or screw. It will also pass over a smaller #8 or #6 screw, though you lose contact area under the screw head, so use the correct ring size where the connection carries load or vibration.
3) What voltage can a Sta-Kon RC363 nylon insulated ring terminal be used at?
Rated 600 V, which covers standard commercial and industrial branch circuits, control panels, motor leads, and lighting feeds. It is a UL recognized component under file E9809.
4) Is the RC363 terminal copper or aluminum, and can I use it on aluminum wire?
The barrel is copper, so it is for copper conductors. Do not crimp aluminum building wire into it, that needs an AL9CU rated connector with the appropriate inhibitor compound.
5) Is a ring terminal or a spade terminal the better choice for a panel connection?
A ring terminal like the RC363 is the closed-tongue type: the screw has to be fully removed to install or remove it, but it cannot vibrate off the stud. A spade or fork terminal slides out sideways without pulling the screw, which is faster for service work but can back out under vibration. For motor terminals, equipment grounds, and anything that moves, the ring is the right call.
6) Do I need a special crimper for Sta-Kon nylon insulated terminals?
Yellow 12-10 AWG insulated terminals like the RC363 crimp with the yellow nest of an insulated-terminal crimp tool. Standard non-insulated or open-barrel dies will cut the nylon sleeve. Sta-Kon barrels are designed for a controlled-cycle insulated crimp, and the nylon body tolerates the crimp without splitting the way vinyl sleeves do.
7) Why choose nylon insulation over vinyl on a ring terminal?
Nylon, as used on the RC363, holds up better to heat, abrasion, and solvents than vinyl and resists cracking when the barrel is crimped or the wire is flexed. For panel and motor work where terminals get pulled and re-dressed, nylon is the more durable insulation.
8) Where is the Sta-Kon RC363 made, and what part number do I order?
