Sta-Kon RB723M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon RB723M ring terminal crimp?
The RB723M is sized for 18 to 14 AWG stranded wire, which is the blue insulation color code on Sta-Kon nylon terminals. If you are terminating 16 AWG control wire or 14 AWG branch conductors, this is the right barrel. For 22-16 AWG you need the red-coded size, and for 12-10 AWG the yellow.
2) Is the Sta-Kon RB723M a UL listed terminal?
Yes, it is covered under UL file E9809, which is the reference an inspector or submittal reviewer will want for a nylon insulated ring terminal on a listed assembly.
3) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork terminal on a terminal block?
A ring terminal like the RB723M has a closed tongue, so the connection cannot vibrate loose or slip off if the screw backs out slightly. That makes it the choice for ground connections, motor and panel studs, and anything in a vibrating environment. A fork or spade terminal installs faster because you do not have to remove the screw, but it can pull out under load. Where code or spec calls for a captive connection, use the ring.
4) Do I need a special crimper for the Sta-Kon RB723M?
Use a crimp tool matched to insulated nylon terminals in the 18-14 AWG range, with the blue nest or die. Pliers or an uncalibrated tool will under-crimp the barrel and the UL listing on the termination depends on the correct tool and die. The barrel is sized for 18-14 AWG, so crimping a single 16 AWG conductor is fine; doubling two conductors into one barrel is not.
5) What is the difference between nylon insulated and vinyl insulated ring terminals?
This Sta-Kon terminal uses a nylon insulating sleeve. Nylon takes more abuse than vinyl during pull-through and resists abrasion and cut-through better in tight panel work, and it holds up at higher temperature. Vinyl is the lower-cost option for benign indoor use. If the terminal gets dragged through a raceway or crimped in a hot enclosure, nylon is the one to spec.
6) Is the Sta-Kon RB723M made in the USA?
Yes. Country of origin is the United States, which matters if you are filling a government, federal, or Buy American flagged order where domestic origin has to be documented on the submittal.
