Sta-Kon RB737 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon RB737 ring terminal accept?
The RB737 is sized for 18-14 AWG conductors, and the blue insulation is the standard color code for that range. If you're terminating 16 AWG stranded control wire or 14 AWG branch wire, this is the right barrel. Anything 12 AWG or larger will not seat in it, and 22-16 wire belongs in a red-coded terminal instead.
2) Is this ring terminal rated for 600 volt circuits?
The Sta-Kon RB737 carries a 600 V rating, which covers normal commercial branch circuits, motor leads, panel grounds, and 480 V three-phase control work. It is also UL listed under file E9809.
3) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork terminal on a terminal block?
A ring terminal like the RB737 has a closed tongue, so it cannot vibrate off a stud even if the nut loosens. That is why it is specified for motor connections, ground bolts, and anything that moves. The tradeoff is you have to back the screw all the way out to install it. A fork (spade) terminal slides under a partly loosened screw, which is faster on dense terminal strips, but it can back out under vibration. Panel and MRO standardization usually favors rings.
4) Is the barrel on this Sta-Kon ring terminal copper or aluminum?
Copper. That matters because the RB737 is intended for copper conductors, not aluminum ones. Aluminum building wire needs a terminal marked AL or AL9CU with the proper inhibitor, so don't use this one on aluminum.
5) Do I need a special crimper for the RB737 vinyl insulated ring terminal?
Use an insulated-terminal crimp tool matched to the 18-14 AWG (blue) nest. The vinyl sleeve is crimped along with the barrel, so a bare-terminal die or a pair of pliers will split the insulation and give you a joint that won't hold pull-out. Nothing else is supplied with the terminal; the stud, nut, and washer come from the equipment side.
6) Is the Sta-Kon RB737 made in the USA?
Country of origin on the RB737 is the United States, which is what a government or institutional buyer needs for domestic-preference procurement.
