1) What stud or screw size does the Sta-Kon RA485 ring terminal fit?
The RA485 is sized for a No. 4 stud, so it lands on a #4 screw or terminal post. If your panel or motor terminal takes a #6, #8 or 1/4-20 stud, the ring will not seat on it and you need the next tongue size up in the same series.
2) Is the RA485 nylon insulated ring terminal rated for 600 volt control circuits?
Yes, it carries a 600 V rating, which covers normal 120/208/240/480 V control and power wiring inside panels, light fixtures and motor connection boxes.
3) Is this Sta-Kon terminal UL listed for use in a panel I have to get inspected?
It is covered under UL file E9809. Inspectors generally also want the terminal crimped with the tooling the manufacturer specifies for that die, so keep the crimp tool matched to the terminal series.
4) Is the barrel on the RA485 copper or aluminum, and can I use it on copper conductors only?
The conductor barrel is copper, so it is intended for copper wire. Do not terminate aluminum conductors with it, aluminum needs a terminal marked AL or AL/CU with the appropriate inhibitor compound.
5) What is the difference between a rectangular ring terminal like the RA485 and a standard round ring tongue?
Both are closed-tongue terminals, so the wire cannot pull off the stud the way it can from a fork or spade. The rectangular tongue is narrower across the body, which helps when terminals sit shoulder to shoulder on a crowded terminal block or small fixture stud. Choose a fork terminal instead only when you need to drop the wire under a loosened screw without removing it.
6) Why is this ring terminal red, and does the color mean anything on the job?
The insulation is red, which in Sta-Kon style terminals is the color code for the smallest of the common wire-size groups. Electricians use it as a quick visual check on a crowded panel that the right size terminal went on the right conductor, and the nylon sleeve gives better pull-out resistance and flexibility than vinyl.
