Sta-Kon RBC14-10 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon RBC14-10 ring terminal crimp onto?
The RBC14-10 is sized for 16-14 AWG stranded copper wire. The green insulation is the color code that goes with that gauge band, so on a panel where you also run 22-16 AWG (blue) and 12-10 AWG (yellow) terminals, green tells a tech at a glance that this barrel is the 16-14. Anything heavier than 14 AWG will not seat in the barrel, and 18 AWG or smaller will not crimp reliably in it.
2) What stud or screw size does the RBC14-10 ring fit over?
The ring is a No. 10 stud size, so it drops over a #10 screw or stud, which is what you find on most terminal blocks, ground lugs and motor terminal boards. It will also pass over a smaller #8 or #6 screw if you use a washer under the head, but it will not fit a 1/4 inch stud. For 1/4 inch, order the 1/4 ring size instead.
3) Is this ring terminal rated for 600 volt control and power wiring?
Yes, 600 V is the rating on the RBC14-10, which covers standard commercial control circuits, motor leads and panel wiring. It also carries UL file E9809, so it can be used where an inspector wants a UL recognized termination.
4) Why pick a ring terminal instead of a fork or spade terminal for a panel?
A ring is a closed barrel, so once the screw is torqued down the wire cannot pull off sideways if the screw backs out. That is why rings get specified for ground connections, motor terminals and anything subject to vibration. A fork or spade is faster to service because you can slide it out without fully removing the screw, which is why techs use them on terminal strips they expect to re-land often. On a #10 stud with 16-14 AWG, the RBC14-10 is the ring choice.
5) What does the heavy-duty nylon insulated version give me over a standard vinyl insulated ring terminal?
Two things. The insulation is nylon rather than vinyl, so it resists abrasion, cracking and solvents better and tolerates more heat, which matters in engine compartments, rooftop units and hot mechanical rooms. The heavy-duty construction means a thicker barrel and tongue for repeated torquing and vibration. The RBC14-10 is the nylon insulated heavy-duty type in 16-14 AWG.
6) Is the barrel on the RBC14-10 copper or aluminum, and can I land it on an aluminum conductor?
The barrel is copper, so it is for copper conductors only. Crimping copper hardware onto an aluminum conductor creates a dissimilar metal joint that corrodes and heats up; for aluminum wire you need a terminal specifically marked AL or AL9CU.
7) Can I standardize on the RBC14-10 across a facility, and is it made in the US?
It is manufactured in the United States, which matters on government and institutional jobs carrying domestic sourcing requirements. For MRO standardization, the practical approach is to stock by gauge band and stud size: the RBC14-10 covers 16-14 AWG on No. 10 studs, and the green insulation makes it easy for a tech to pull the right one out of a bin without reading the stamp.
8) Do I need a special crimper for Sta-Kon nylon insulated terminals?
Use an insulated-terminal crimper with the color-coded nest matched to the gauge band, meaning the green or 16-14 position on the tool. A bare-terminal or uninsulated die will cut through the nylon sleeve. The barrel strips and crimps like any 16-14 AWG insulated terminal; no soldering is needed.
