Sta-Kon RCCT21 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the Sta-Kon RCCT21 butt splice accept?
The RCCT21 is a 12-10 AWG butt splice, so it joins two conductors in the 12 to 10 AWG range. The yellow insulation is the standard color code for that range, which makes it easy to spot the right barrel in a mixed bin on the truck. Barrel is copper.
2) Can I use a Tefzel butt splice in a high heat location like near a boiler or engine compartment?
The RCCT21 carries a 150 C temperature rating, which is well above the 105 C ceiling on ordinary nylon or vinyl insulated splices. That is what the fluoropolymer (Tefzel) insulation buys you: engine compartments, boiler rooms, kiln and oven wiring, rooftop equipment. Voltage rating is 600 V.
3) Is the Sta-Kon RCCT21 splice UL listed?
Yes. The RCCT21 is covered under UL file E9809 and rated 600 V, which is what an inspector or a spec writer on an institutional job will ask for.
4) Do I need a special crimper for the RCCT21, or will my standard insulated terminal tool work?
It crimps like any insulated butt splice in the 12-10 AWG range, so a ratcheting insulated terminal crimper with the yellow 12-10 nest is the tool. Crimp both ends, one conductor per side. A plain plier style crimper will close the barrel but a controlled cycle tool is what gets a repeatable crimp on a copper barrel this size.
5) Is a Tefzel butt splice better than a heat shrink splice for a wet or outdoor location?
Different jobs. The RCCT21 is a fluoropolymer insulated splice built for heat, 150 C, not for sealing. If the splice sits in standing water, a direct burial location, or anywhere it needs a moisture seal, use an adhesive lined heat shrink butt splice instead. For dry high temperature runs, the Tefzel barrel is the one that survives.
6) Can I splice a 12 AWG wire to a 10 AWG wire with one of these?
Yes, as long as both conductors fall in the 12-10 AWG range the barrel is sized for. The RCCT21 accepts 12 or 10 on either end, so going from a 12 AWG branch to a 10 AWG feeder is a legitimate use. Stepping outside that range, say 14 AWG on one side, needs a different splice size.
7) Is the Sta-Kon RCCT21 made in the USA for a government or federal job?
Country of origin on the RCCT21 is the United States, which is what procurement needs for domestic sourcing language on federal, military, and many institutional contracts.
