1) Is the RCJ30 a full-tension splice or a jumper connection?
It is a jumper sleeve, not a full-tension splice. The RCJ30 meets the 40 percent partial tension requirement of ANSI C119.4. Use it for jumper and loop connections where the conductor is not carrying line tension; a run under full mechanical tension needs a full-tension compression splice instead.
2) Can I use the RCJ30 to splice 3/0 copper instead of ACSR?
It is specified for 3/0 ACSR, aluminum conductor steel reinforced. Copper of the same nominal size does not share the same stranding or outside diameter, so match the sleeve to ACSR and pick a copper-rated compression splice for copper runs.
3) Does the Blackburn RCJ30 need a compression tool, or can it be bolted?
Compression only. The RCJ30 is a compression splice and has to be crimped with the correct die set for the sleeve; there is no bolted or set-screw option on it.
4) Is the RCJ30 jumper sleeve insulated?
No insulation on it. The RCJ30 is a bare metal compression sleeve, which is normal for overhead ACSR jumper work. If the application needs covering, that gets added separately with tape, tubing or a cover.
