1) Will the Kaba Ilco IP-22 intermediate pivot work on an aluminum storefront door?
That is exactly what the IP-22 is built for. It is an intermediate pivot for aluminum doors and frames, in both recessed door and flush face frame applications, with die cast aluminum construction. It is a 3/4 inch (19.05 mm) offset pivot, so the door has to be hung offset, not center hung and not butt hinged. On a hollow metal or wood door, look at a different pivot.
2) Do I need to order the IP-22 pivot left hand or right hand?
Handing matters. The IP-22 is sold as a left hand (LH) or right hand (RH) pivot, so you pick the hand that matches the door you are working on. Order the wrong hand and it will not mount. Each hand is offered in clear and in dark bronze.
3) What is an intermediate pivot for, and do I need one if I already have top and bottom pivots?
An intermediate pivot is the middle pivot in an offset-hung set. It does not carry the door weight (on an offset-hung aluminum door the weight rests on the floor mounted bottom pivot) but it keeps the door aligned through the middle of its height and takes racking load off the top and bottom. Tall or heavily used storefront leaves are the usual case for adding one. The IP-22 is the intermediate only, so you still need your top and bottom pivots. For a 3/4 inch offset top pivot, the Dormakaba 75120 full mortise standard top pivot is a match on offset.
4) Will the IP-22 replace the pivot that came on my existing aluminum entrance door?
Kaba Ilco states these pivots replace most major door manufacturers' pivots on aluminum doors and frames, covering both recessed door and flush face frame applications. The check to run before ordering is the offset: the IP-22 is a 3/4 inch offset unit, so if your door is hung on a 1-1/2 inch offset (the Dormakaba 15220 is an example of that geometry), the IP-22 will not drop in.
5) What replaces the Kaba Ilco IP-22 pivot on a wood door or a door over 200 pounds?
The Kaba Ilco IP-22 is built for aluminum doors and frames and is a standard duty intermediate pivot. For a wood door or any door weighing more than 200 pounds, the Dorma 7471K side load floor pivot set is the recommended part; it is a heavy duty, fire rated floor pivot set. If you want to stay with a mortised bottom pivot rather than a floor set, the Hager 497 is a heavy duty forged bronze full mortise bottom pivot hinge with a ball bearing.
6) My storefront door is sagging and dragging at the strike. Will replacing the pivot fix the alignment?
The IP-22 gives you 1/8 inch (3.18 mm) of vertical adjustment, which is enough to take up a modest amount of drop and reset the door in the frame. On an offset hung aluminum door the leaf weight sits on the floor mounted pivot portion, which is what keeps it from sagging in the first place, so if the door has dropped more than about an eighth of an inch the bottom pivot is usually the part to look at rather than the intermediate.
7) Is the IP-22 pivot heavy duty enough for a high traffic entrance?
It is a standard duty commercial pivot. That suits normal storefront and office entrance traffic on aluminum doors. For a heavy leaf or an abused entrance, step up: the Ives 7212 offset pivot set is rated to 200 lb capacity and the Ives 7215 to 500 lb, both heavy duty. For a wood door or any door over 200 pounds, the Dorma 7471K side load floor pivot set is the one specified.
8) Do the Kaba Ilco IP-22 pivots come with screws, or do I need to buy fasteners separately?
Fasteners are included with the set, so there is nothing extra to source for the mounting itself. What you do need to confirm is the hand and the finish, and that your top and bottom pivots are also 3/4 inch offset.
9) Offset pivot or butt hinges on an aluminum storefront door?
Aluminum storefront leaves are almost always pivot hung rather than hinged, because the narrow stile has nowhere to carry hinge screws and the load is better taken at the floor. The IP-22 is the offset-hung route: door weight rides on the floor mounted pivot with a full race ball bearing in the bottom pivot portion, and the intermediate keeps the leaf true through the middle. If your door is already prepped for reinforcing at a butt hinge instead, that is a different family of part, such as the Hager 253 full surface reinforcing pivot for 4-1/2 inch wide hinges.
10) Will the Hager 253 reinforcing pivot work in place of a Kaba Ilco IP-22 intermediate pivot?
They solve different problems. The Hager 253 is a full surface reinforcing pivot sized for 4-1/2 inch wide hinges on a 1-3/4 inch door with a zinc plated finish, so it reinforces a hinge hung door rather than hanging it. The Kaba Ilco IP-22 is an offset intermediate pivot for aluminum doors and frames, part of a pivot hung arrangement. If the door hangs on butt hinges, the 253 is the reinforcing part; if it hangs on pivots, the IP-22 is the intermediate.
11) Can these pivots be serviced without pulling the door out of the frame?
The IP-22 is replaceable from inside the door, so a swap does not mean taking the leaf down. It is also theft resistant and weatherproof, which is what you want on an exterior storefront opening where the hardware is reachable from the street side.
12) What finishes do the Kaba Ilco IP-22 pivots come in, and can I match the other doors in my building?
