1) Does a Kaba Ilco turnknob mortise cylinder take a key, or is it thumbturn only?
It's a thumbturn cylinder, turned by hand from the inside rather than by a key. That makes it the inside half of a storefront or aluminum door setup where the outside gets a keyed mortise cylinder and the inside gets a knob for egress. If you need key operation on both sides, this isn't the part, you want a keyed mortise cylinder in the matching length instead.
2) What length Ilco turnknob mortise cylinder do I need for my door?
Length is set by how thick the stack is that the cylinder threads through, and the Ilco turnknob line runs from 15/16 inch (23.8 mm) up to 2 inch (50.8 mm) in ten steps: 15/16, 1, 1-1/8, 1-1/4, 1-3/8, 1-1/2, 1-5/8, 1-3/4, 1-7/8 and 2 inch. Measure the existing cylinder from the face of the housing to the back of the threads and match it. 1-1/8 inch is the common size on standard aluminum storefront doors; going too long leaves the cylinder proud of the face and exposed, too short and the cam won't reach the lock.
3) Will an Ilco thumbturn cylinder work in an Adams Rite storefront lock?

The turnknob cylinders ship with a choice of two cams, Standard or Adams Rite, and the cam is what actually drives the lock, so the wrong one turns freely and does nothing. Adams Rite cam for Adams Rite style narrow stile deadlatches and deadlocks; Standard cam for conventional mortise locks. Pick the cam before you pick the finish.
4) I'm replacing a broken thumbturn on a storefront door, do I have to change the whole lock?
No. These Ilco turnknobs are sold as replacement parts, so you back the old cylinder out of the lock body, thread the new one in at the same length and with the same cam style, and the lock itself stays in the door. What you need to match is length, cam type, and finish. Nothing about the door prep changes.

Yes, and that's the normal way a storefront door gets built: keyed mortise cylinder outside, turnknob inside, both the same length and the same finish so the door reads consistently. The turnknob side comes in the full ten lengths from 15/16 inch to 2 inch and the same eleven finishes, so whatever you spec on the key side has a match on the turn side. Cam style has to agree on both halves too.
