Kawneer KW037227-40 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the Kawneer KW037227-40 and what job does it do on a pair of doors?
It's a round face flush bolt, a Kawneer service part used on paired commercial door assemblies. The flush bolt holds the inactive leaf fixed at the frame so the active leaf has something to latch against. The round face profile engages the frame strike or dust-proof strike. Kawneer supplies it as a replacement component for existing exit device assemblies rather than as a complete device.
2) Can I use this flush bolt on a residential door or a hollow metal door?
It's specified as commercial only, and it is built for Kawneer exit device assemblies, which are aluminum entrance doors. For a residential opening or a standard hollow metal pair, you want a flush bolt made for that door type instead. Ordering this one for a non-Kawneer opening usually ends in a return.
3) What does round face mean on a flush bolt, and how do I tell if that's what I have?
Round face refers to the profile of the faceplate that sits in the door edge, curved rather than flat or square cut. Pull the existing bolt and look at the plate: if the ends are radiused, a round face replacement like the KW037227-40 will drop into the same mortise. A flat or square face bolt uses a different cutout, and swapping profiles means reworking the door edge.
4) Is the KW037227-40 flush bolt a genuine Kawneer part or an aftermarket copy?
Genuine. The KW037227-40 comes out of Kawneer's own service parts program, so it's the factory component rather than a generic equivalent. That matters on Kawneer aluminum entrances, where a near-miss flush bolt can sit proud of the stile or miss the strike alignment.
5) What finish is the KW037227-40 flush bolt, and will it match my other Kawneer door hardware?
Dark Bronze, applied at the factory. It's the standard Kawneer dark bronze used across their door hardware, so on an opening where the existing pulls, rails and exit device are dark bronze it will read as a match. If your storefront is clear anodized or black, this one will stand out.
6) Do I need anything besides the flush bolt to finish a repair on the inactive leaf?
The KW037227-40 is the bolt itself. It has to land in a strike, either the frame strike at the head or a dust-proof strike in the threshold, depending on whether you're replacing a top or bottom bolt. If the existing strike is worn, damaged or was never there, order that separately. Replacing the bolt alone on a worn strike will leave you with the same rattling inactive leaf.
7) I manage a building with Kawneer entrances. Is the KW037227-40 the right part to keep on the shelf for flush bolt failures?
If your openings are Kawneer paired doors in dark bronze, yes, this is the service part for that repair, and it's the kind of item worth stocking because a failed flush bolt takes the inactive leaf out of service. Standardizing on the one part number across a portfolio of matching Kawneer openings keeps the finish consistent and shortens the repair. Confirm the existing bolt carries the KW037227-40 designation before you stock deep, since Kawneer uses different bolt profiles across its entrance lines.
