Kawneer KW050079-17 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Kawneer KW050079-17 flush bolt actually do on a pair of doors?
It is the flush bolt that holds the inactive leaf of a pair. The KW050079-17 is a round face flush bolt from Kawneer's Hurricane line, mortised into the inactive leaf so that leaf stays latched while the active leaf carries the exit device and gets the daily traffic. If your pair is currently held by a flush bolt that no longer throws or retracts, this is the part that restores that function, not a part you add to a single door.
2) Will a Kawneer flush bolt fit an aluminum door from another manufacturer?
Treat it as Kawneer-only. The KW050079-17 is built as a Kawneer service part for compatible Kawneer door systems, and flush bolt pockets in aluminum stiles differ by manufacturer, so it should not be ordered as a generic replacement for a Tubelite, YKK or Arcadia leaf. If the door is Kawneer, match the existing part number stamped on the bolt or in your original hardware schedule.
3) Is the KW050079-17 a complete flush bolt or just the faceplate?
It is a service replacement flush bolt assembly, catalogued by Kawneer under model number KW050079-17 and supplied as a genuine Kawneer service part for compatible Kawneer door assemblies. It is a repair component for an existing opening rather than a full exit device, so the panic hardware, strikes and door prep on the active leaf are separate items.
4) What finish is the KW050079-17 and will it match my existing aluminum storefront doors?
Clear Aluminum. That is the standard mill/clear anodized appearance used on most aluminum entrance systems, so it blends with clear anodized Kawneer framing. On dark bronze or black anodized doors it will stand out, and you would want the matching finish variant of the same bolt instead.
5) I manage a property with Kawneer Hurricane doors. Should I use a genuine Kawneer service part or an aftermarket flush bolt?
Use the genuine part where the opening is part of a Hurricane assembly. The KW050079-17 is produced as a Kawneer service replacement component so the fit and the finish match the original, which matters on Hurricane-line assemblies where the hardware was specified as part of the tested door package. A generic flush bolt may fit the pocket loosely and changes the hardware on a door assembly that was specified as a system.
6) Do I need to order anything else to replace a failed flush bolt on the inactive leaf?
Usually just the bolt itself, but check the strike. The KW050079-17 replaces the bolt mechanism in the inactive leaf; the head strike in the frame and the floor strike or threshold cutout it throws into are separate parts and stay in place if they are sound. If the bolt was binding rather than broken, the cause is often a worn or misaligned strike, so inspect both before the door goes back into service.
7) Is this flush bolt suitable for a high-traffic commercial entrance or is it a residential part?
Commercial only. Kawneer classifies the KW050079-17 as a commercial door hardware component, and it is used on Kawneer aluminum entrance and storefront doors in offices, schools, healthcare, retail, government and industrial buildings. It is not intended for residential door hardware.
