Kawneer KW118223-40 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the Kawneer KW118223-40 mortise cylinder used for?
It's a 1-1/8 inch mortise cylinder made for Kawneer Paneline hardware installed in Tuffline door systems. It's a genuine Kawneer service part, so it's the direct replacement when the original cylinder in that Paneline assembly is worn, damaged, or being rekeyed. Finish is Dark Bronze.
2) Will a 1-1/8 inch mortise cylinder fit my Kawneer Paneline exit device?
The 1-1/8 inch length is the dimension Kawneer specifies for Paneline hardware in Tuffline doors, and the KW118223-40 is built to that length. Measure your existing cylinder from the face of the plug to the back shoulder: if it's 1-1/8 inch, this drops straight in. A longer or shorter cylinder will either bottom out or leave the cam short of the device's actuator.
3) Does the KW118223-40 come keyed to my existing Kawneer doors?
No. It ships keyed different, meaning it comes with its own key that will not operate any other cylinder. If you need this opening on a building master or matched to other doors, a locksmith will need to rekey it after it arrives, or you order a keyed-alike configuration instead.
4) I manage a building where every tenant needs their own key. Is this the right cylinder?
Yes for that situation. Keyed different means each cylinder carries a unique key change, so one tenant's key won't open another suite. That's the usual setup for multi-tenant offices and retail bays on Kawneer aluminum entrances. If you instead want one key to open a run of doors, keyed different is the wrong order.
5) Do I need to buy anything else to replace a Paneline cylinder, or is the key included?
The KW118223-40 is supplied as a keyed different cylinder, so it comes with its own keys. What it does not include is the exit device or Paneline trim itself. If the cam on your old cylinder is damaged or the device's lock housing is worn, that's a separate part. Swapping the cylinder alone is the normal fix when the keying is the only problem.
6) Can I use an aftermarket mortise cylinder instead of the Kawneer part?
Kawneer specifies this cylinder for Paneline hardware because the length and cam engagement are matched to that assembly. A generic 1-1/8 inch mortise cylinder may thread in but still miss the device's actuation if the cam style differs. Ordering the KW118223-40 removes that guesswork, since it's the manufacturer's own service part for the Tuffline/Paneline combination.
7) Is the Dark Bronze on this Kawneer cylinder going to match my existing storefront hardware?
Dark Bronze is the standard architectural bronze finish Kawneer uses across its commercial entrance hardware, so it reads consistently against dark bronze Paneline trim and Tuffline door framing. Note that only the visible cylinder face and ring show once installed, so a small variation against aged anodized framing is typical on any replacement part.
8) Is this a residential-grade cylinder or a commercial one?
Commercial. The KW118223-40 is catalogued by Kawneer as a commercial service part for aluminum entrance systems, and it's used in offices, schools, healthcare buildings, retail, and government facilities running Kawneer door systems. It isn't intended for residential door hardware.
