Kawneer KW400549-40 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What framing system does the Kawneer KW400549-40 shear block hinge package fit?
The KW400549-40 is built for the Kawneer Trifab 400 framing system. It is a self-aligning offset arm shear block butt hinge package sold as a genuine Kawneer service part, so it drops into the Trifab 400 door assembly it was made for. If your storefront is a different Kawneer series, this is not the part to order.
2) Do I need to order extra parts with the KW400549-40, or is the shear block package complete?
It ships as a complete shear block package assembly, so no additional shear block components are required to make the replacement. The offset arm is self-aligning, which is what sets the hinge position for correct shear block engagement during install.
3) What finish does the Kawneer KW400549-40 hinge come in?
Dark Bronze, applied at the factory to match the standard Trifab 400 storefront finish. That is the only configuration offered under model KW400549-40, so a facility standardizing on dark bronze entrances will get a consistent look across openings.
4) Is the Kawneer KW400549-40 suitable for residential doors?
No. This hinge package is classified as commercial hardware and is intended for aluminum storefront and entrance systems, typical of offices, schools, healthcare, retail, and municipal buildings. A residential door will not have Trifab 400 framing to mount it to.
5) Is the KW400549-40 an aftermarket hinge or a genuine Kawneer part?
Genuine Kawneer. It is catalogued as a Kawneer service part and classed as a replacement part, which is what a property manager or GC wants when a specified Trifab 400 entrance has to be restored to the original manufacturer configuration rather than patched with a generic butt hinge.
