Kawneer KW450548-40 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What exactly is the Kawneer KW450548-40, and what does the package include?
The KW450548-40 is a single-action offset arm shear block package for Kawneer Trifab 450 storefront framing. The shear block anchors and aligns the pivot assembly in the frame, and the offset pivot itself comes with the package, so you are not sourcing the pivot separately. It is a genuine Kawneer service part supplied in Dark Bronze.
2) Will the KW450548-40 shear block work on a Kawneer framing system other than Trifab 450?
No. This shear block package is engineered specifically for Kawneer Trifab 450 storefront framing, and the shear block is cut to that frame's profile. If your opening is a different Kawneer system, you need the shear block package made for that system rather than this one.
3) Is this pivot package for single-acting or double-acting storefront doors?
Single-action only. The KW450548-40 is an S/A configuration, meaning the door swings one direction. A double-acting entrance needs a center-hung double-acting pivot set instead, not this offset arm assembly.
4) My storefront door is dragging and the top pivot is loose in the frame. Is the shear block the part I need?
Often yes. On a Trifab 450 opening, the shear block is the structural block in the frame that holds the pivot in alignment; when it works loose or deforms, the door drops and binds even though the pivot itself looks fine. The KW450548-40 replaces the block and the offset pivot together, which restores the alignment rather than just swapping a worn pivot into a damaged block.
5) Does the Dark Bronze on this Kawneer pivot package match the rest of my storefront?
The finish is Kawneer's factory-applied Dark Bronze, the same finish used across Trifab 450 systems, so the exposed pivot hardware reads consistently with existing dark bronze framing and door rails. If your storefront is clear anodized or a painted color, order the shear block package in that finish instead.
6) Is an offset pivot the right choice, or should I be looking at a continuous hinge for my storefront door?
An offset pivot like the KW450548-40 carries the door load at the top and bottom and lets the door swing clear of the frame, which is how most aluminum storefront entrances are hung, and it is what a Trifab 450 frame is prepped for. A continuous geared hinge is the alternative when a door is sagging badly or seeing very high abuse, but it requires different frame and door prep, so it is not a drop-in swap for an existing pivoted opening.
7) Do I need to order anything else to finish a pivot replacement on a Trifab 450 door?
The KW450548-40 covers the shear block and the offset pivot as one package, so that half of the job is complete out of the box. What it does not include is the mating hardware on the door itself, the intermediate offset pivot or the bottom arm and pivot, depending on which end you are servicing. Confirm which position on the door you are replacing before ordering.
8) Is this a residential-grade part or is it for commercial entrances?
Commercial. The KW450548-40 is built for high-traffic storefront and curtainwall door systems, and it turns up in office lobbies, retail fronts, school and healthcare entrances, and municipal buildings. It is not a residential door part.
