Keedex K-BXES45 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) How deep does my gate frame or tube steel need to be for a Keedex K-BXES45 strike box?
You need at least 1 1/2 inches of clear depth behind the face, since that's the depth of the K-BXES45 box body. The face cutout has to take 2 3/8 inches by 5 1/16 inches. On narrow tube steel gate posts, measure the inside dimension before you cut, because a box that bottoms out is the most common reason this install stalls.
2) Is the Keedex K-BXES45 welded in or does it screw in place?
Weld-in. The K-BXES45 is a weldable box made of 14 gauge steel, so it's installed by welding into the gate frame or hollow metal opening, not fastened with screws. Plan for a welder on site and for finishing the weld and painting afterward, since the box ships as bare steel.
3) Do I need a strike box if I'm putting an electric strike in a gate instead of a door frame?
Usually yes. A hollow metal door frame already has a cavity behind the strike prep; a gate stile or a picket gate does not, so the strike has nowhere to sit and no way to protect the wiring. The K-BXES45 gives the HES4500 that cavity and welds into the gate. If you're working in a standard prepped hollow metal frame with room behind it, you likely don't need a box at all.
4) Is 14 gauge steel heavy enough for a strike box on an exterior gate?
14 gauge is a structural-weight sheet steel, and it's what the K-BXES45 is formed from. Welded into the frame, the box becomes part of the gate assembly rather than a fastened-on part, which is why this construction is used on commercial exterior gates and perimeter openings where a screwed-in strike plate is the weak point.
5) Is the Keedex K-BXES45 rated for commercial use?
It's a commercial-duty part. The K-BXES45 is a Keedex weldable strike box specified for commercial door hardware applications, in 14 gauge steel, for use with an electric strike. It isn't a residential accessory, and it's typically bought by integrators and gate installers rather than picked up for a home gate.
