Klein Tools S8 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Klein Tools 1/4-inch nut driver safe to use on live electrical circuits?
No. The Klein S8 nut driver is not insulated and will not protect against electrical shock. Use it only on de-energized work. If you need to work on or near live parts, you need a 1000V insulated nut driver instead, not this one. Klein also calls for approved eye protection whenever it is in use.
2) Will a 1/4-inch nut driver with a hollow shaft fit over a long bolt or threaded stud?
Yes, that is the point of the hollow shaft. The 1/4-inch Klein nut driver runs hollow the full length of the shaft, so it drops over long bolts, studs, and the protruding threads you get on stacked circuit boards or panel standoffs instead of bottoming out on them. A solid-shaft driver stalls as soon as the thread hits the bottom of the socket.
3) Should I get the 3-inch or the 6-inch shaft on the Klein 1/4-inch nut driver?
Two shaft lengths are offered: 3 inches (model S8) and 6 inches (model S86). The 3-inch is the standard length and handles most work. Step up to the 6-inch when you need reach into a deep enclosure, past a bundle of conductors, or down a long run of exposed stud. Same 1/4-inch hollow drive either way.
4) Is the Klein 1/4-inch nut driver magnetic? Will it hold the nut on the tip?
No, it has no magnetic tip. The hollow-shaft design and a magnet don't mix, since the bolt passes up into the shaft. For starting loose nuts in an awkward overhead spot, you'd want a magnetic solid-tip driver or a nut setter instead.
5) Is the 1/4-inch size SAE or metric?
SAE (inch) sizing, 1/4 inch across the flats. It will not correctly seat a metric nut; 1/4 inch sits between 6mm and 7mm, so a metric fastener either won't enter or will be loose enough to round off. For metric panel work order a metric-marked driver.
6) Will the handle spin loose on the shaft under hard torque?
The shaft is anchored into the handle with internal flanges, which is what keeps it from twisting out when you lean on a tight nut. Shaft is steel with chrome plating to resist corrosion in damp panels or truck boxes, and the driver meets or exceeds applicable ASME / ANSI specifications. Made in USA.
7) How do I tell the 1/4-inch Klein driver apart from the rest of the set in my pouch?
By the handle color. The 1/4-inch is red, and Klein color-codes the Comfordome handles across the nut driver line so you can grab the right size out of a pouch without reading the stamp. The handle is a plastic grip shaped to sit in the palm.
8) How much does the Klein 1/4-inch nut driver weigh?
About 0.15 lbs, roughly 68 grams, so it adds almost nothing to a tool pouch carried all day on a service route.
