Klein Tools A316-3 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the Klein A316 cabinet tip screwdriver on live electrical work?
No. The Klein Tools 3/16-inch cabinet tip screwdriver is not insulated and will not protect against electrical shock. Use it only on de-energized circuits, and wear approved eye protection. If you need to work energized, you need a properly insulated (1000V rated) driver instead.
2) What shank lengths does the Klein 3/16-inch cabinet tip screwdriver come in?
Five shank lengths: 3-inch (A316-3), 4-inch (A316-4), 6-inch (A316-6), 8-inch (A316-8), and 10-inch (A316-10). The short 3-inch is for working close in a panel or box where you cannot swing a long driver; the 8 and 10-inch reach down into deep recessed holes and behind equipment.
3) What is a cabinet tip screwdriver and why would an electrician pick one over a regular flat blade?
A cabinet tip has no flare at the end, so the tip is the same width as the shank. That lets it drop straight down a recessed hole or into a deep switch or terminal cavity without the blade shoulder catching on the sides. A standard keystone flat blade flares out at the tip for more torque, but it will bind in a recess. The A316 runs a 3/16-inch cabinet tip on a small-diameter shank for exactly that kind of electrical and telecom terminal work.
4) Will the Klein A316 hold up to hard turning without the blade twisting loose in the handle?
The handle uses internal flanges that anchor the shaft against twisting, so the blade will not spin in the grip under torque. Blades are nickel-chrome, precision forged and polished with black tips, and the shaft is chrome plated to resist corrosion. What it is not built for is prying or chiseling, and Klein calls that out directly.
5) Does the Klein A316 screwdriver meet a recognized hand tool standard, and is it made in the USA?
It meets or exceeds applicable ASME / ANSI specifications, and it is made in the USA. That is usually enough for an MRO or government spec line that calls for a domestically made, standards-compliant hand tool.
6) Which A316 length should I stock for panel and device box work?
For terminal screws inside a loaded panel or a crowded device box, the 4-inch A316-4 or 6-inch A316-6 gives enough reach without fighting the enclosure. Go to the 3-inch A316-3 when clearance in front of the work is tight. The 8-inch A316-8 and 10-inch A316-10 are the ones to keep for deep recessed holes, terminal strips set back in cabinets, and telecom gear where your hand has to stay clear of the equipment.
7) Is the handle on the Klein A316 comfortable enough for a full day of driving screws?
The A316 uses Klein's amber Comfordome handle, a smooth round grip sized to sit in the palm so you can push through the turn rather than pinch it. Good for repetitive terminal work; it is a manual driver, not a cushion-grip cushioned-tip design.
