Klein Tools D234-6C – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What connectors do the Klein D234-6 crimping pliers actually crimp?
The D234-6 crimps and seats Scotchlok UG, UR and UY connectors, the insulation displacement connectors used for telecom and low voltage splicing. Scotchlok is a 3M trademark. If you are terminating ring or spade terminals instead, this is the wrong tool - it is built around IDC button connectors.
2) Is the Klein D234-6 IDC crimper safe to use on live circuits?
No. The tool is not insulated. The yellow plastic-dipped handles are for grip and comfort only, not protection against electrical shock. De-energize before working, and wear approved eye protection.
3) What is the difference between Klein D234-6 and D234-6C?
Same pliers, different action. The D234-6C is the spring-loaded version, so the jaws self-open between crimps - useful when you are seating a long run of UR or UY connectors one-handed. The D234-6 is the standard, non-spring model. Everything else, including the Scotchlok crimping function and side-cutting knives, is common to both.
4) Can these Klein IDC pliers cut wire as well as crimp?
Yes. There are induction hardened side-cutting knives built into the jaws, 0.6 inches of cutting edge, so you can trim conductor tails without switching tools. The hardening is there for edge life on repeated cuts.
5) Will the Klein D234-6 fit in a crowded telecom enclosure or a pedestal?
It is a compact tool: 5.86 inches overall, with a 1.085 inch jaw that is 0.688 inches wide and 0.375 inches thick, and it weighs about a quarter pound. The curved handles run 2.5 inches. That footprint works inside network interface boxes and cross-connect cabinets where a full-size lineman's plier will not turn.
6) Can these pliers be tethered for work at height?
No. The D234-6 is not tether capable - there is no lanyard hole or attachment point. For overhead aerial or lift work where a drop-prevention policy is in force, you need a tool rated and equipped for tethering.
7) How durable are these crimpers for daily production splicing work?
Built for repetition: forged in the USA from US-made tool steel, with a hot-riveted joint so the handles do not develop wobble, and induction hardened cutting knives. Those are the two parts that wear first on a crimping plier used all day.
