Koch 102718001 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Koch Multi-Pleat AB filter fit a Trion Air Bear cabinet?
The Multi-Pleat AB series is built as the replacement media for Trion Air Bear and Air Cub air cleaners. It comes in the two nominal sizes those cabinets take, 20x25x5 and 16x25x5. Match the size stamped on the filter you are pulling out, or measure the cabinet slot, and order that size.
2) I have a Honeywell F-series or Aprilaire Space-Gard air cleaner, is the AB filter the right one?
No. The AB filter is cut for Trion Air Bear and Air Cub cabinets. For a Honeywell F-series cabinet the Koch Multi-Pleat HW series is the matching replacement, and for Aprilaire Space-Gard media the Multi-Pleat SG series is. Same Multi-Pleat Residential family, different cabinet fit, so ordering across them will leave you with a filter that does not seat.
3) MERV 8 or MERV 11 for the Koch Multi-Pleat AB, which should I order?
Both ratings are offered in both AB sizes, 20x25x5 and 16x25x5. MERV 8 is the lower efficiency of the two and the closer match to standard factory media in a residential air cleaner. MERV 11 captures finer particulate and is the one to specify when tenants or occupants are asking for better filtration. Higher MERV media is denser, so if you step a unit up from 8 to 11 keep an eye on the blower and the static pressure the equipment is rated for.
4) Can I standardize a whole building or a portfolio of units on the Koch Multi-Pleat AB?
Where the units are on Trion Air Bear or Air Cub cabinets, yes. The AB filter covers those cabinets in two nominal sizes, 20x25x5 and 16x25x5, and each size is available at MERV 8 and MERV 11, so a mixed portfolio can be standardized on one efficiency level across both cabinet sizes. Buildings on Honeywell F-series or Aprilaire Space-Gard cabinets need the HW or SG series instead.
5) Are these Koch pleated filters only for houses, or can I use them on commercial equipment?
Application covers commercial, industrial, and residential HVAC. The AB size and cut is made for Trion Air Bear and Air Cub cabinets, so the real limit is the cabinet, not the building. Light commercial and multi-family units running those same air cleaners take the same filter.
6) What is the nominal versus actual size question on a 20x25x5 media filter, will it actually slide in?
20x25x5 and 16x25x5 are nominal sizes, which is how the cabinet is specified rather than a caliper measurement of the media. Order by the size printed on the filter you are removing or on the air cleaner cabinet label. A Trion Air Bear or Air Cub cabinet calling for one of those two sizes takes the matching AB filter.
