Kwikset 730MILRDT-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Kwikset 730MIL Milan privacy lever fit a door bored for a 2-3/8 inch backset, or do I need a different latch for 2-3/4?
One latch covers both. The 730MIL Milan ships with an adjustable 6-way (6AL) latch that sets to either a 2-3/8 inch or a 2-3/4 inch backset, so the same box works whether your bore is centered at the residential 2-3/8 or the deeper 2-3/4 prep common on wider stiles. Nothing extra to order.
2) Do I have to specify left or right hand when ordering the Milan 730MIL lever?
No handing to call out. The Milan privacy lever is reversible and installs on either a left-hand or right-hand door, so property managers buying in quantity can stock one part number for every bed and bath opening in the building.
3) Can a bathroom door with this lever be opened from the hallway if someone is locked in?
Yes. The 730MIL is a privacy function set, so it locks from the inside only and has no key, but the outside trim has an emergency unlocking feature so a caregiver, parent, or maintenance tech can release it from the corridor side. That is why it suits bedrooms and bathrooms rather than entry doors.
4) My door already has a strike and the frame is prepped with square corners. Will the Milan lever set work without re-mortising?
Most likely. The latch comes with interchangeable faceplates, round corner, square corner, and a drive-in collar, so it matches the prep that is already in the door edge. The strike supplied in the box is an RCS round corner strike, so if your frame is prepped square corner you will reuse the existing strike plate rather than the one included.
5) Is the Kwikset 730MIL Milan lever suitable for a commercial corridor or a school restroom?
It is built and catalogued as residential hardware, aimed at bedrooms, bathrooms, and other privacy interior doors in homes and apartments. For institutional restroom or patient-room traffic, step up to a commercial cylindrical privacy lock such as the Hager 2540 with Withnell lever or the Arrow MK02-TA privacy set, both of which we carry in heavier commercial lines.
6) What is a commercial-duty alternative to the Kwikset 730MIL Milan privacy lever for a bed/bath door in a multi-family building?
The Kwikset 730MIL Milan is a residential privacy leverset. For a commercial-duty privacy opening, the Hager 2540 is a Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. The Arrow MK02-TA is another privacy/bed/bath cylindrical lock, fire rated, with a Tudor knob rather than a lever, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch.
7) I do not need a privacy turn on a hall or closet door - what should I order instead of the Milan privacy lever?
The Milan 730MIL is a privacy function lever with an inside turn button and emergency outside release, which a closet or hall door does not need. A passage leverset is the simpler choice: the Callan Asheville is a Grade 3 passage leverset in satin nickel, the Bravura Atlanta and Bravura Orlando are Grade 2 passage leversets with round trim, and the Arrow GL01 is a Grade 2 non-keyed passage lock with the Sierra lever for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch.
8) Can I use the Kwikset 730MIL Milan on an exterior or keyed entry door?
No. The Milan 730MIL is non-keyed, with a privacy function intended for bedrooms, bathrooms, and other interior privacy openings. For a keyed entry opening, the Callan Artino is a Grade 3 entrance leverset, the Master Lock RL Series RL01 is a Grade 3 keyed entry lever in a return style, and the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch.
9) What finishes does the Kwikset Milan round rose lever come in for matching other hardware in the unit?
Five finishes: Venetian Bronze, Satin Nickel, Bright Chrome, Satin Chrome, and Matte Black. Satin Nickel and Matte Black are the usual pairings with contemporary interiors, and Venetian Bronze matches traditional bronze trim already on a building's doors.
10) I need passage sets and dummy levers to match these privacy levers on the same floor. What pairs with them?
The 730MIL is privacy only, so for closets and halls you need a separate passage set and for inactive leaves a dummy. If matching within one design family matters more than matching Kwikset specifically, the Bravura Miramar and Atlanta round trim passage leversets and the Callan Asheville passage lever are round rose passage options we stock, and the Callan Bentley or BEST 7KC single dummy trim covers the dummy openings.
11) Is this Kwikset Milan lever ADA compliant for a unit that has to meet accessibility requirements?
The Milan is an ADA compliant lever design, which is the point of using a lever rather than a knob: it operates without tight grasping or wrist twisting. If you are outfitting accessible units, the whole opening still has to comply, but the trim itself meets the requirement.
12) Can I use the 730MIL Milan to replace a knob-style privacy set on a bedroom door?
Yes, as long as the existing door has a standard cylindrical bore. The Milan is a cylindrical privacy lockset and the included latch adjusts to either 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset, so it drops into the same prep a privacy knob came out of. If the old latch faceplate is square corner or a drive-in, the matching faceplate is in the box.
13) What decorative-brand privacy lever compares to the Kwikset Milan round rose lever?
The Baldwin Estate 5103 privacy lever with the 5048 rose is a privacy/bed/bath leverset in a decorative Estate line, so it covers the same bedroom and bathroom function as the Milan lever with a different trim family. The Baldwin 5103 is also offered in passage and in left- and right-hand half dummy versions if other doors on the same run need matching trim without a privacy turn.
14) Does a dummy lever match the Milan privacy lever for a non-latching door?
The Milan 730MIL includes an adjustable 6AL latch and RCS strike, so it operates a latchbolt. On a closet or double door leaf with no latch, use a dummy trim instead: the Callan Bentley is a Grade 2 dummy lever, the BEST 7KC Series 1DT is a Grade 2 single dummy trim cylindrical lever, and the BEST 9K Series 1DT is the Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy trim.
15) What should I specify instead of the Milan lever for a high-traffic institutional corridor?
The Kwikset 730MIL Milan is a residential privacy lever. For heavy institutional traffic, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-handed passage cylindrical lock, fire rated, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch; the Falcon T101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage lever with pressure release technology; and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage/closet lever, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch.
16) Does the Milan lever have any antimicrobial treatment for healthcare or senior living use?
Yes, the Milan lever is built with Microban protection on the hardware, which is a common ask for assisted living and multi-family common areas where lever handles get touched constantly.
17) Is a keypad lever a substitute for the Milan privacy lever?
They solve different problems. The Milan 730MIL is a non-keyed privacy lever that locks from the inside for bed and bath use. Keypad leversets such as the Lockey 2835 mechanical pushbutton keyless lever with passage function and ADA compliance, or the Lockey 1150 heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with adjustable backset, control access by code from the outside rather than providing an inside privacy turn. The Lockey 2835 fits doors 1-3/16 inch to 2 inch and the 1150 fits 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch.
18) What square-trim lever can I pair with the round-rose Milan on the same project?
The Milan 730MIL uses a round rose. If some openings call for square trim, the Bravura Tampa is a Grade 2 passage leverset with square trim, while the Bravura Miramar is a Grade 2 passage leverset with round trim in a US4 satin brass finish if you want to stay round. The Milan privacy lever itself is offered in Venetian Bronze, Satin Nickel, Bright Chrome, Satin Chrome, and Matte Black.
