Kwikset 730PSKRDT-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Kwikset 730PSK Pismo privacy knob fit a 2-3/8 inch backset, or do I need to order a different latch for 2-3/4?
One part covers both. The 730PSK Pismo ships with the 6AL adjustable latch, which sets to either a 2-3/8 inch or a 2-3/4 inch backset, so you match whatever bore center is already drilled in the door without ordering a second latch. Those are the two standard residential backsets, so an existing prepped door will take it either way.
2) Does the Kwikset Pismo privacy knob need to be ordered left hand or right hand?
No handing to specify. The Pismo privacy knobset is reversible and works on a left-hand or right-hand swing, so you order one part number for every interior door in the unit and set the handing at install.
3) Can you get into a bathroom from the outside if someone locks the Kwikset 730PSK privacy knob and can't open it?
Yes. The 730PSK is a privacy function set: it locks from the inside with a turn button on the knob, and the outside knob has an emergency release that opens with a small tool. No key and no keyway, so it can't be keyed into a master system.
4) I need the same Pismo look on a hall or closet door where no lock is wanted - what do I use?
The 730PSK Pismo is a privacy function with an interior turn button, so it is not the right part for a hall or closet. For passage use, the Dexter C2000 Series passage knob is a Grade 2 non-keyed passage/hall/closet lock for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Pamex FTF Baron passage knob is a Grade 3 option in the same door range. Bravura also offers round-trim passage knobsets in the Albany and Lynchburg styles at Grade 2.
5) What is the closest equivalent to the Kwikset 730PSK Pismo privacy knob from another brand?
The Dexter C2000 Series privacy knob is the nearest match: it is a Grade 2 cylindrical privacy/bed and bath knob lock, non-keyed, fitting doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, the same Grade 2 privacy function the 730PSK Pismo carries. The difference is styling - the Dexter uses a ball knob, while the Pismo is a round knob on a round rose.
6) Can the 730PSK Pismo be used on an entry door, or do I need something keyed?
The Pismo 730PSK is a privacy lock with an interior turn button and emergency outside release - there is no key cylinder, so it is not an entry lock. For a keyed opening, the Dexter C2000 Series entry/office knob is Grade 2 and keyed for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Cal-Royal BER00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office knob lock with a Kwikset keyway, and the Master Lock BC Series is a Grade 3 keyed entry knob.
7) For a commercial corridor or school, is the Pismo knob the right choice or should I step up?
The Kwikset 730PSK Pismo is a residential Grade 2 privacy knobset for bedrooms and bathrooms. For higher-traffic commercial openings, the Schlage D Series D10S is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage knob lock, the Falcon X101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage knobset with interchangeable core for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, and the Sargent 8XG04 is a Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom knob lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset.
8) Is a Kwikset Pismo knob strong enough for apartment bedroom and bathroom doors?
It carries ANSI/BHMA Grade 2 certification, which is the mid-tier residential and light commercial rating and is the usual specification for multi-family interior bed and bath doors. Kwikset lists the 730PSK as residential. For a corridor or classroom door taking constant public traffic, a Grade 1 cylindrical set such as the Schlage D Series is the heavier option.
9) What strike comes with the Kwikset 730PSK, and will it drop into my existing frame cutout?
An RCS round corner strike is included. Round corner is what most pre-machined wood and steel residential jambs use, so it drops into an existing round-corner mortise. If your frame is cut for a square-corner or full-lip strike, reuse the old strike plate instead of the RCS, or plan on filing the mortise.
10) Is there a lower-grade privacy knob if Grade 2 is more than the interior doors need?
Yes. The Cal-Royal BER20 is a Grade 3 privacy/bed and bath knob lock with brass trim for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Pamex FTF Baron is a Grade 3 privacy knob lockset for the same door thickness range. The Kwikset 730PSK Pismo is certified to ANSI/BHMA Grade 2, a higher cycle and strength tier than either.
11) What knob looks like a substitute for the 730PSK Pismo but will not actually lock the door?
Dummy knobs. The BEST 6K Series single dummy trim, Bravura Biloxi round-trim dummy knobset, Schlage A170 single dummy trim, and Omnia 442/00 single dummy latchset all mount a knob on the door but have no latch or locking mechanism at all. The Kwikset 730PSK Pismo is a working privacy lockset with an interior turn button, a 6AL adjustable latch and an RCS round corner strike.
12) I need a privacy knob on a thicker door than 1-3/4 inch - what are my options?
Deltana privacy and entry knobs cover a wider range: the Deltana 6112 St. Thomas privacy knob fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Kwikset 730PSK Pismo ships with a 6AL latch adjustable between 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch backsets, which addresses backset rather than door thickness.
13) I want a decorative privacy knob instead of the Pismo - what else is there?
The Baldwin Estate 5077 Bethpage privacy knob with R027 rose and the Baldwin Estate 5000 Baltimore 2 inch knob with 5148 rose privacy lock, which comes preconfigured with a 2-3/8 inch backset and full lip strike, are both privacy-function knobs in traditional styling. The Kwikset 730PSK Pismo is a minimalist round knob on a round rose and includes an RCS round corner strike.
14) What finishes does the Kwikset Pismo round rose knob come in?
Six: Satin Nickel, Bright Chrome, Satin Chrome, Satin Brass, Venetian Bronze, and Matte Black. If you're standardizing a building, Satin Nickel and Matte Black are the usual matches to current hinge and bath hardware; Venetian Bronze suits older oil-rubbed trim packages.
15) Does the Kwikset Pismo knob have any antimicrobial treatment for healthcare or hospitality use?
Yes, Microban is built into the Pismo knobset. That is a surface treatment on the hardware itself, which matters on high-touch bath and patient-room doors in hospitality and senior living.
16) What tools do I need to install the Kwikset 730PSK on an already-bored door?
A screwdriver. The Pismo privacy set installs into a standard bored door prep, the 6AL latch adjusts to the existing backset, and the RCS strike screws to the jamb. No special cylinder or keying work, since privacy function is non-keyed.
17) Is there a knob option that covers both a keyed door and an interior door in one purchase?
The Schlage Residential F500 Plymouth with Georgian knob is a combo pack with adjustable backsets and dual strikes for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Kwikset 730PSK Pismo is a single privacy function set, supplied with the 6AL adjustable latch and RCS round corner strike.
