Kwikset 81209-002 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Are the Kwikset 81209-002 keys already cut, or do I need them cut at a hardware store?
They come pre-cut. The 81209-002 is an extra cut key set, random cut, meaning the keys arrive with a cut pattern already on them rather than as flat blanks you take to a key machine. Because the cuts are random, they will not match an existing Kwikset lock, so they are meant to be paired with a cylinder you re-pin or key to them.
2) Will these Kwikset keys work in my standard 5-pin Kwikset deadbolt?
No. These are 6 pin keys, and a 6 pin key is cut for a six-chamber cylinder. A standard residential Kwikset 5-pin cylinder takes a 5-pin key. Match the pin count of your cylinder before ordering.
3) Will the Kwikset 81209-002 extra cut keys work in a Schlage cylinder?
No. The Kwikset 81209-002 is a 6-pin Kwikset key, cut to a random bitting, and it is made for Kwikset cylinders. For a Schlage C keyway you need a blank cut for that keyway, such as the Emtek MS4-KEYBLKC key blank, which is specified for the Schlage C keyway. Keyway profiles are not interchangeable, so a Kwikset key will not enter a Schlage C plug.
4) Can I use the 81209-002 keys to rekey several doors in a building to one key?
Yes, that is the usual reason to buy them. Since the cuts are random rather than matched to an existing lock, a property manager or locksmith pins each 6-pin Kwikset cylinder to one of these keys, which lets a group of openings share a single key. Keep one key as the reference bitting for future cylinders.
5) What is the difference between buying extra cut keys and buying uncut key blanks?
The Kwikset 81209-002 ships as extra cut keys with a random bitting, so it is intended to be used as supplied or to be re-cut to an existing Kwikset cylinder. An uncut blank such as the Emtek MS4-KEYBLKC requires a key machine to cut it to your bitting before it will operate anything. If you do not have cutting equipment on site, a cut key is the one that works out of the box; if you duplicate keys in house, a blank gives you the bitting you choose.
6) I manage apartments with Schlage entry locks - are Kwikset 81209-002 keys a usable stock item for me?
Not for Schlage-keyed doors. The Kwikset 81209-002 is a residential-duty Kwikset key and only fits Kwikset keyways. A portfolio standardized on Schlage C should stock a Schlage C keyway key such as the Emtek MS4-KEYBLKC. If the property has a mix of both brands, the two are separate stock lines and cannot cover for each other.
7) Are these Kwikset extra keys for commercial or residential locks?
Residential. The Kwikset 81209-002 6-pin extra cut keys are catalogued for residential door hardware use, so they suit homes, rentals, and light multi-family openings rather than a commercial Grade 1 cylinder program.
