Kwikset 83561-001-EACH – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does the Kwikset 83561-001 spring cover actually do inside the cylinder?
It's the cap that retains the top pins and springs in the bores of a Kwikset pin and tumbler cylinder. Without it seated, the springs and top pins push straight out of the chambers. It's a consumable part for locksmiths rekeying or rebuilding cylinders, not a component the end user ever sees once the lock is assembled.
2) Can I buy Kwikset 6-pin spring covers in bulk for a rekeying shop?
Two quantities are offered: a single pack and a pack of 50. A locksmith or a property maintenance shop rekeying multiple cylinders is better served by the 50 pack, since covers are commonly deformed or lost during disassembly and are not worth reusing when bent.
3) Does the Kwikset 83561-001 include pins and springs?
No. It's the cover only. Top pins, bottom pins and springs are ordered separately as rekeying components, so if you are rebuilding a cylinder from bare parts you need those alongside this cover.
4) Is the Kwikset 83561-001 a commercial part or residential?
Kwikset lists it as a commercial part, under the Cove collection. In practice a spring cover is chamber-count specific rather than grade specific, so what governs fit is that the cylinder is a 6-pin Kwikset pin and tumbler.
5) I'm a property manager standardizing locks in my building. Is this something I need to stock?
Only if your maintenance staff rekey Kwikset cylinders in house. The 83561-001 is a shop-level component for 6-pin Kwikset pin and tumbler cylinders that is handled during cylinder disassembly. If rekeying is contracted out, the locksmith supplies it and you'd stock keys and cylinders instead.
