Kwikset 84638 Square Corner Deadbolt Full Lip Strike

The 84638 is made for Kwikset deadbolts. The bolt hole and the 1-5/8 inch center-to-center screw spacing are cut for that prep, so on another brand's deadbolt you're relying on the jamb mortise and screw holes lining up rather than on a stated fit. If you're replacing the strike on an Emtek deadbolt, the Emtek 83223 standard deadbolt strike plate is the square-corner strike from that brand. For a Codelocks unit, the Codelocks ASA strike plate is the matching part.

Square corners is exactly what the 84638 is cut for. It drops into a traditionally chiseled or routed mortise with sharp corners, the kind a carpenter cuts by hand. If your existing pocket has rounded corners (a router-template cut), a square-corner plate leaves the corners short and you'd either chisel them square or buy a radius-corner strike instead.

The Emtek 83223 is the nearest match. It is a standard deadbolt strike plate with square corners, the same corner style as the Kwikset 84638 square corner full lip deadbolt strike, so it drops into the same traditional chiseled or routed mortise in the jamb rather than requiring a radius-corner prep. Both are deadbolt strikes, not latch strikes, so the cutout accepts a solid bolt throw.

The Deltana SP2753 is a deadbolt strike plate measuring 2-3/4 inches by 1-1/4 inches in steel, so it covers more jamb face height than the 2-1/4 inch by 1-5/8 inch Kwikset 84638. Where a previous strike or an oversized chisel left the jamb open beyond the footprint of the 84638, the taller Deltana plate spans it. Confirm the screw holes land in solid jamb material before committing to either footprint.

The lip on the 84638 is 1-1/8 inches, a flange that wraps out of the mortise, over the face of the jamb and toward the door casing. It protects the jamb edge from the bolt scarring it and covers the gap where the wood shows. Choose it when the strike sits in a wood jamb with visible edge. If the jamb face is flush against the casing with no room for the flange to lie flat, a shorter-lip or flat T-strike is the better call.

Three: satin chrome, satin nickel, and dark bronze/black. That covers the common Kwikset residential finishes, so you can match the strike to the deadbolt already on the door rather than replacing the whole lockset when a strike gets bent or torn out. Order by finish per door rather than one finish across the building.

No handing. A deadbolt strike is a symmetrical square-corner plate with a rectangular bolt opening, so the same 2-1/4 x 1-5/8 inch plate goes into a left-hand or right-hand jamb without a separate part number. Order by finish, not by hand.

The Kwikset 84638 is the full lip version, with a 1-1/8 inch lip that extends over the jamb to meet the door casing and cover that exposed edge. The Emtek 83223 is described as a standard deadbolt strike plate with square corners. If the finished look depends on the flange reaching the casing, the full lip 84638 is the one specified for that condition; both share square corners, so the mortise prep is common to either.

The Kwikset 84638 is made for use with Kwikset deadbolts and is classified for residential use, which is what makes it the like-for-like choice when the existing doors already carry Kwikset bolts. It comes in satin chrome, satin nickel, and dark bronze/black so the plates can match the rest of the trim across a fleet of units. The 84638 is a surface strike plate, not a box strike, so it covers the mortise but adds no depth into the framing on its own. On any exterior door worth securing, run 3 inch screws through the plate into the stud behind the jamb rather than the short screws that come with most residential trim. That, not the plate, is what resists a kick.
