Kwikset 966BLRH-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Kwikset 966BL Balboa interior pack work on its own as a lock?
No. The 966BL Balboa interior pack is trim only, and the lever is non-functioning. It supplies the inside lever and the deadbolt turn piece; you still need a Kwikset exterior pack to get a working entry set, and keys are ordered separately. Buying it alone gets you a handsome inside half of a door and nothing that latches.
2) Do I have to order the Balboa interior pack left hand or right hand?
Handing is a real choice here. The 966BL Balboa pack is ordered as Left Hand or Right Hand, and both are offered in all six finishes. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your left it is a left hand door. Kwikset also describes the pack as reversible, so the lever can be set for either swing.
3) Is the Kwikset Balboa handleset trim rated for a commercial building?
It is a residential product, ANSI/BHMA Grade 3, with an Entry/Office function. Grade 3 is the residential tier of the standard, so for an apartment unit entry or a single family front door it is on spec. For a commercial opening or a high traffic multi-family corridor, a Grade 2 or Grade 1 lockset is the right call instead.
4) What is the closest equivalent to the Kwikset 966BL Balboa interior pack if I need inside handleset trim with a deadbolt thumbturn?
The Schlage Residential JH59 Broadway lever inside trim for handleset with Collins deadbolt thumbturn covers the same job: a lever inside trim for a handleset with a deadbolt thumbturn, and it carries the same Grade 3 rating and an Entrance function. The Kwikset 966BL Balboa is also Grade 3 with an Entrance function and a Balboa lever, so the two line up on grade, function and handle style. The JH59 fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick.
5) My door is 2 inches thick - what inside handleset trim works when the Kwikset 966BL will not?
For thicker doors, the Weslock 2100 Julienne interior single cylinder handleset trim and the Weslock 7900 Carlow interior single cylinder handleset trim are both rated for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick, and the Weslock 6205 Utica Woodward interior handleset trim covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Schlage Residential FC59 Alexandria glass knob interior trim pack with deadbolt thumbturn goes further, 1-5/8 inch to 2-3/4 inch. The 6205 and the FC59 are dummy function, so pick the 2100 Julienne or 7900 Carlow if the inside trim has to work with a keyed single cylinder handleset the way the Balboa 966BL interior pack does.
6) What finishes does the Kwikset 966 Balboa lever interior pack come in?
Six: 514 Matte Black, 510 Venetian Bronze, 619 Satin Nickel, 625 Polished Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome and 605 Polished Brass. Every one of them is available in both left and right hand, so if you are matching a fleet of doors you can standardize on a finish and still order the correct swing per opening.
7) How does the deadbolt work from inside with the Kwikset 966BL pack?
Inside, it is a thumbturn. The deadbolt is keyed on the exterior side only and throws or retracts from a turn piece on the interior, so nobody in the house needs a key to get out. If you want a keyed cylinder on both sides (a double cylinder, common on doors with glass beside them), this is not that configuration.
8) I want a lever inside instead of a knob on my Kwikset handleset. Which 966 pack do I order?
The Balboa is a lever, in a traditional style, so it gives you the lever inside while the handleset grip stays outside. Kwikset builds the 966 interior pack in a long list of trims for the 800 handlesets, levers like Ashfield, Commonwealth, Halifax, Katella, Lisbon, Milan, Montreal, Pembroke, Singapore, Tustin, Delta, Dorian, Henley and Ladera, and knobs like Abbey, Hancock, Laurel, Pismo, Aliso, Cove, Polo and Tylo. Levers are the easier grip for wet hands, gloves, or anyone with limited grip strength.
9) What is the difference between a dummy interior trim pack and the Kwikset 966BL entrance pack?
Function. The 966BL is an Entrance pack: the lever itself does not operate a latch, but the pack carries the interior turn piece that throws the deadbolt on a keyed entry door. A dummy trim, like the Schlage F59 Accent lever interior pack or the Weslock 1405 interconnected handleset dummy trim, is pure inside appearance with no deadbolt turn at all, which is what you use on an inactive leaf of a pair or a door that never locks.
10) I need Grade 2 inside trim instead of Grade 3 - what are my options?
The Schlage Residential F59 Accent lever interior pack and the Schlage Residential FC59 Alexandria glass knob interior trim pack are both Grade 2. The Kwikset 966BL Balboa interior pack is ANSI/BHMA Grade 3. Both Schlage packs are dummy function, so they suit an opening where the inside trim is decorative rather than one where an interior turn piece throws the bolt.
11) The Kwikset 966BL Balboa pack is handed - is there an inside handleset trim I can stock without picking a hand?
The Kwikset 966BL Balboa interior pack is ordered by hand, right hand or left hand, across all six finishes. Among peers, the Weslock 7900 Carlow interior single cylinder handleset trim for Greystone or Rockford is likewise a left hand part, while the Schlage Residential JH59 Broadway lever inside trim and the Weslock 1405 interconnected handleset dummy interior trim are not called out by hand in the same way. For a fleet where you do not want to split the order by hand, the JH59 Broadway is the closest Grade 3 entrance-function inside trim.
12) What do I use for the inside of an interconnected handleset rather than the Kwikset 966BL Balboa pack?
The Weslock 1405 interconnected handleset dummy interior trim is built for an interconnected handleset and fits doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. It is dummy function. The Kwikset 966BL Balboa interior pack is made to pair with Kwikset Signature Series 800 and 687 handlesets and is an entrance pack with an interior turn piece, so the two are matched to different exterior handleset arrangements.
13) What tools do I need to install a Kwikset 966 interior handleset pack?
A screwdriver. The interior pack mounts to the exterior handleset through the existing bore, so on a door already prepped for a Kwikset 800 or 687 handleset it is a swap of the inside trim, not a re-bore. No drilling, no chisel work.
14) Is the Kwikset Balboa interior pack any good for a rental or a high-touch door?
For turnover and shared entries there are two things worth knowing: the hardware carries Microban antimicrobial protection, which Kwikset states keeps the surface 99.9 percent cleaner than unprotected hardware, and the finishes run to Satin Nickel and Satin Chrome that hide fingerprints better than Polished Brass or Polished Chrome on a door people touch all day. It is Grade 3 residential, so it suits unit entry doors rather than building common doors.
