Kwikset 966DL-26 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Kwikset 966DL Delta interior pack work on its own, or do I need the exterior handleset too?
On its own it does nothing. The 966DL Delta interior pack is inside trim only, so the lever is non-functioning until it is mated to a Kwikset exterior handleset pack, which has to be bought separately. Keys are also sold separately. Order it as a replacement or restyle for the inside face of a Signature Series 800 or 687 handleset, not as a complete lockset.
2) How does the deadbolt lock from the inside on this 966DL pack?
By turn piece. The 966DL is keyed one side only, so the deadbolt takes a key on the exterior and a thumbturn on the interior. That is an entry/office style entrance function, and it means no key is needed to get out.
3) What grade is the Kwikset 966DL, and is it suitable for an apartment or commercial entry?
ANSI/BHMA Grade 3, and classified residential. Grade 3 is the residential tier, fine for single family and light multi-family units, but if you are specifying for a commercial entrance with heavy daily traffic you want Grade 2 or Grade 1 hardware instead. The Schlage Residential F59 Accent and FC59 Alexandria interior packs are listed as Grade 2 if you need a step up.
4) What is the closest equivalent to the Kwikset 966DL Delta interior pack from another brand?
The Schlage Residential JH59 Broadway lever inside trim for handleset with Collins deadbolt thumbturn is the nearest match. Like the Kwikset 966DL Delta pack, it is a lever interior trim for a handleset with a deadbolt thumbturn, and it is also Grade 3. The JH59 is from Schlage's J Series and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The 966DL Delta is a reversible lever interior pack with an interior turn piece for the deadbolt, made for Kwikset Signature Series 800 and 687 handlesets, so the choice comes down to which exterior handleset is already on the door.
5) What looks like a substitute for the 966DL Delta interior pack but will not work as one?
Dummy interior trims are the common mix-up. The Schlage F59 Accent lever interior pack and the FC59 Alexandria glass knob interior trim pack are both listed with a Dummy function, as are the Weslock 6205 Utica Woodward interior dummy handleset trim and the Weslock 1405 interconnected handleset dummy interior trim. Dummy trim is surface-applied decoration with no operating mechanism. The Kwikset 966DL Delta pack is an Entrance-function interior pack whose deadbolt is operated by an interior turn piece, so if the door needs to actually lock from inside, a dummy trim will not do it.
6) I have a thick 2 inch entry door. What interior handleset trim should I use instead of the Kwikset 966DL Delta pack?
For a 2 inch door, look at the Weslock single-cylinder interior handleset trims: the Weslock 2100 Julienne interior single cylinder handleset trim in the Traditionale series and the Weslock 7900 Carlow left-hand interior single cylinder handleset trim in the Molten Bronze series are both rated for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. The Schlage FC59 Alexandria interior trim pack with deadbolt thumbturn covers an even wider 1-5/8 inch to 2-3/4 inch range, though it is a glass knob with Dummy function rather than an operating lever. The Kwikset 966DL Delta pack is built specifically for Kwikset Signature Series 800 and 687 handlesets, so switching brands means changing the exterior half as well.
7) Does the Kwikset 966DL Delta pack come with keys or a cylinder?
No keys. The 966DL ships as interior trim, and keys are sold separately; the keyed cylinder lives in the exterior handleset pack since the deadbolt is keyed one side only. If you are keying a fleet of units alike, handle that through the exterior pack.
8) Is the Kwikset 966DL Delta lever handed, or can I use it on either swing?
Fully reversible. The Delta lever installs on right hand or left hand doors, so you only have to stock one part for a building with doors swinging both ways.
9) Is there a fire rated version of this Kwikset handleset hardware?
An optional 1/3 hour UL fire rating is available for all functions except 802, 819 and 502. If your opening needs a labeled assembly, specify the fire rated option and confirm the function you are ordering is not one of those three.
10) My door is thicker than standard, closer to 2 inches. Is there interior handleset trim that covers that?
For thick doors, look at Weslock: the 2100 Julienne entry interior trim and the 1405 interconnected dummy trim are both listed for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, and the 6205 Utica Woodward dummy trim covers 1-3/8 to 2 inches. The 7900 Carlow single cylinder trim is also 1-3/4 to 2 inches, but it is handed, so specify left or right.
11) Should I buy an interior pack with a deadbolt turn piece or a dummy trim pack?
Depends on whether the inside needs to operate anything. The 966DL Delta pack has a working interior turn piece for the deadbolt, so it belongs on a live entry door where someone has to throw the bolt from inside. A dummy trim pack, like the Weslock 1405 or 6205 Utica Woodward or the Schlage F59 Accent, is cosmetic only and suits an inactive leaf of a pair or a door where all the locking happens elsewhere.
12) Does the interior trim I choose need to match the handing of the door?
It depends on the product. The Kwikset 966DL Delta interior pack has a fully reversible lever and installs on both right-handed and left-handed doors, so one part number covers either swing. By contrast, the Weslock 7900 Carlow interior single cylinder handleset trim for Greystone or Rockford is a left-hand part, so handing has to be confirmed before ordering. If you are stocking for mixed openings, the reversible Kwikset pack avoids keeping two handings on the shelf.
13) What tools do I need to swap out the interior trim on an 800 handleset?
A screwdriver. The 966DL interior pack mounts with screws through the existing handleset prep, so a unit turn for a property manager is a minutes-long job with no drilling if the exterior pack is staying in place.
14) Is there an antimicrobial option on this lever, for a healthcare or hospitality install?
The Delta interior pack carries Microban antimicrobial product protection, which Kwikset states keeps the hardware 99.9 percent cleaner than unprotected surfaces. It is a surface treatment on residential Grade 3 hardware, not an infection control device, so treat it as a hygiene nicety rather than a spec item.
15) Is there a knob version instead of a lever for a handleset interior pack?
Yes. The Kwikset 966DL Delta pack uses a lever handle in the traditional Delta design. If a knob suits the opening better, the Schlage Residential FC59 Alexandria glass knob interior trim pack with deadbolt thumbturn is a knob-style interior trim pack, Grade 2, fitting doors 1-5/8 inch to 2-3/4 inch thick, with a Dummy function rather than an operating latch. Levers are typically the choice where an easier grip is wanted, so confirm which the rest of the doors use before mixing styles.
