Kwikset 966T-15 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Kwikset 966T Tylo interior pack a complete lock, or do I need the exterior handleset too?
On its own the 966T Tylo interior pack does nothing. It is interior trim only, so you have to buy the matching Kwikset exterior handleset pack to get a working entry set, and keys are sold separately as well. If you already have a Signature Series 800 or 687 handleset on the door and just want to change the inside knob and deadbolt turn, this is the part you want.
2) Do I have to order a left hand or right hand version of the Kwikset 966T?
No handing to specify. The 966T is reversible and installs on either a right hand or left hand door, so one part number covers every opening in the house.
3) What is the closest Schlage equivalent to the Kwikset 966T Tylo interior pack with deadbolt turn piece?
The Schlage Residential JH59 Broadway is the nearest match. Like the Kwikset 966T Tylo pack, it is inside trim for a handleset that includes a deadbolt thumbturn and carries an Entrance function at ANSI/BHMA Grade 3. The difference is the handle style: the 966T Tylo pack uses a knob, while the JH59 uses the Broadway lever with a Collins deadbolt thumbturn. The JH59 is listed for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. Note that Kwikset interior packs are built to mate with Kwikset Signature Series 800 and 687 handleset exterior packs, so the Schlage trim is an alternative only if you are also changing the exterior half to Schlage.
4) I need handleset interior trim for a door thicker than 1-3/4 inch - what should I use instead?
Look at the Weslock options. The Weslock 2100 Julienne interior single cylinder handleset trim and the Weslock 7900 Carlow interior single cylinder trim for Greystone or Rockford handlesets are both rated for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick, and the Weslock 6205 Utica Woodward dummy trim covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. On the Schlage side, the FC59 Alexandria glass knob interior trim pack with deadbolt thumbturn spans 1-5/8 inch to 2-3/4 inch. Each of these is matched to its own manufacturer's exterior handleset, so pick the interior trim from the same family as the exterior you are installing.
5) What finishes does the Kwikset 966T Tylo interior pack come in?
Four: 619 Satin Nickel, 625 Polished Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome, and 605 Polished Brass. Match the finish code to the exterior handleset pack you are ordering so the inside and outside of the door agree.
6) Is the Kwikset 966T rated for commercial use in an apartment building?
It is a residential product carrying ANSI/BHMA Grade 3, the residential-duty level. For apartment unit entry doors in light traffic that is common practice, but a commercial opening with heavy cycling should be specified at Grade 2 or Grade 1 instead.
7) How does the inside of the door lock on the 966T pack?
The deadbolt is operated by a turn piece on the inside. The exterior side is keyed, so it is a single cylinder setup: key outside, thumbturn inside. The knob itself carries an entry/office function.
8) Is there a simpler interior trim option if the door does not need to lock?
Yes. The Kwikset 966T Tylo pack is an Entrance-function interior pack with a deadbolt turn piece, so it is built for a locking opening. If the door is decorative or non-latching, dummy interior trim is the simpler choice: the Weslock 6205 Utica Woodward interior dummy handleset trim, the Weslock 1405 interconnected handleset dummy interior trim, and the Schlage F59 Accent lever interior pack are all dummy-function trims. The Schlage FC59 Alexandria glass knob trim is also a dummy function but still includes a deadbolt thumbturn, which is useful when the deadbolt is the only thing that locks.
9) Which comparable handleset interior trims are handed, and which are reversible?
The Kwikset 966T Tylo interior pack is reversible and fits both right hand and left hand doors, so one part number covers either swing. That is not true across the board: the Weslock 7900 Carlow interior single cylinder trim is a left hand part, so you have to confirm the door swing before ordering it. If you are stocking trim for a mixed set of openings, the reversible Kwikset pack keeps you to a single SKU.
10) How does the grade of the Kwikset 966T interior pack compare with the Schlage residential interior packs?
The Kwikset 966T Tylo interior pack is ANSI/BHMA Grade 3 certified, as is the Schlage JH59 Broadway inside trim. The Schlage F59 Accent interior pack and the FC59 Alexandria glass knob trim pack are both Grade 2. All of these are residential-duty products, so for a multi-family or single-family entry the grade difference mostly reflects cycle and strength testing on the trim rather than a change in what it will fit.
11) What tools do I need to install the Kwikset 966T interior pack?
A screwdriver. The interior pack mounts to the existing handleset prep, so swapping trim on a door that already has an 800 or 687 handleset is a short job with no new boring.
12) Does the Kwikset 966T have any antimicrobial coating on the knob?
Yes, Microban antimicrobial product protection is built into the hardware, which Kwikset states keeps the surface 99.9 percent cleaner than unprotected hardware. That is a point healthcare, hospitality, and multi-family buyers tend to ask about on touched surfaces like knobs.
