Kwikset 966PSKRDT-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand version of the Kwikset 966PSK Pismo interior pack?
Neither. The Pismo interior pack is reversible and fits both left hand and right hand doors, so one part number covers either swing. Nothing about handing needs to be specified on the order, which matters if you are buying for a building where the doors swing both ways.
2) The exterior handleset on the door is decorative and nothing needs to lock from inside. What interior trim should be ordered instead of a keyed interior pack?
For an opening where the inside trim does not have to operate anything, a dummy interior trim is the right call rather than the Kwikset 966PSK Pismo pack, which is an Entrance-function pack with a deadbolt turn piece. The Weslock 6205 Utica Woodward interior dummy handleset trim is a Dummy function in the Molten Bronze Series and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. The Weslock 1405 is a Dummy interior trim for interconnected handlesets, fitting 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. On the Schlage side, the F59 Accent lever interior pack and the FC59 Alexandria glass knob interior trim pack are both listed as Dummy function, Grade 2, in the F Series and FC Series.
3) Is a Schlage F59 Accent interior pack a working substitute for a Kwikset 966PSK Pismo and deadbolt interior pack?
They do different jobs. The Kwikset 966PSK Pismo pack is an Entrance-function interior pack whose deadbolt is operated by a turn piece on the interior of the lock. The Schlage F59 Accent lever interior pack is listed as a Dummy function in the F Series, Grade 2, for doors 1-5/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. A Dummy interior pack has no operating deadbolt turn, so it will not give the inside of the door a way to throw the bolt. The Schlage interior trim that does include a deadbolt thumbturn is the JH59 Broadway, an Entrance function in the J Series.
4) What finishes and rose shapes can I get the Kwikset 966PSK Pismo interior pack in?
Five finishes: 510 Venetian Bronze, 619 Satin Nickel, 625 Polished Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome and 622 Matte Black. Each one comes with either a round or a square rose, ten combinations in total. Pick the rose shape to match the exterior handleset trim already on the door, then match the finish across the rest of the openings.
5) How does the deadbolt operate from inside with the Kwikset 966PSK Pismo pack?
A thumbturn. The 966PSK is the keyed-one-side arrangement: key on the outside through the exterior pack, turn piece on the inside. Nobody inside needs a key to get out, which is what most homeowners and residential property managers want on an entry door.
6) Is the Kwikset Pismo a knob or a lever on the inside?
Knob. Pismo is the knob style in Kwikset's Signature Series interior packs, with a contemporary look. If the building standard is levers, or the unit needs a lever for easier operation, look at the 966 lever packs instead: Ashfield, Commonwealth, Halifax, Katella, Lisbon, Milan, Montreal, Pembroke, Singapore, Tustin, Balboa, Delta, Dorian, Henley, Ladera RDT, Ladera SQT.
7) What else could I use instead of the Kwikset 966PSK if I need a working interior trim with a deadbolt thumbturn?
The closest cross-brand equivalent we carry is the Schlage Residential JH59 Broadway lever inside trim for handlesets with the Collins deadbolt thumbturn, an entrance-function trim rated Grade 3 for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches. It is a lever rather than a knob. For glass knob styling, the Schlage FC59 Alexandria interior trim pack with deadbolt thumbturn covers a wider 1-5/8 to 2-3/4 inch door thickness, but it is dummy function.
8) I have a thick entry door, around 2 inches. Which interior handleset trim should I look at?
For doors up to 2 inches, look at the Weslock trims we carry. The Weslock 2100 Julienne interior single cylinder handleset trim and the Weslock 7900 Carlow interior single cylinder trim for Greystone or Rockford both cover 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. The Weslock 6205 Utica Woodward dummy trim spans 1-3/8 to 2 inches, but dummy function means no latch or bolt operation.
9) What is the difference between a dummy interior handleset trim and the Kwikset 966PSK entry pack?
Function. The 966PSK Pismo pack is entrance function with a working deadbolt turn piece on the inside. Dummy trims, like the Schlage F59 Accent lever pack or the Weslock 1405 interconnected handleset trim, are surface-mounted trim with no operating mechanism, used on inactive leaves of a pair or on a door that never latches. Buying a dummy when you need a locking door is the common mistake here.
10) Does the interior handleset trim need to be ordered by hand of the door?
It depends on the product. The Kwikset 966PSK Pismo and deadbolt interior pack is reversible and fits both right handed and left handed doors, so one part number covers either swing. The Weslock 7900 Carlow interior single cylinder handleset trim for Greystone or Rockford is a left hand part, so the hand of the opening has to be confirmed before ordering it. For a fleet of doors with mixed swings, a reversible pack keeps the order to a single line.
11) Which interior handleset trims are keyed on the inside rather than turn-piece operated?
The Kwikset 966PSK Pismo and deadbolt interior pack is keyed one side, with the interior side operated by a turn piece. If a cylinder on the inside face is what the opening calls for, the Weslock 7900 Carlow interior handleset trim is listed as a Single Cylinder function and the Weslock 2100 Julienne interior handleset trim is listed as an Entry function in the Traditionale series; both fit doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick. Double-cylinder inside keying is a code question in many jurisdictions, so confirm the local egress requirement for the building before specifying it.
12) How do the security grades compare across handleset interior trim when standardizing a portfolio?
The Kwikset 966PSK Pismo and deadbolt interior pack is certified ANSI/BHMA Grade AAA for security, durability and finish and is a residential product. Among the alternatives, the Schlage F59 Accent interior pack and the FC59 Alexandria interior trim pack are both Grade 2, and the Schlage JH59 Broadway inside trim is Grade 3. Grades describe the tested performance level of each product, so specifying one grade across a set of doors keeps the standard consistent from unit to unit.
13) What tools do I need to install a Kwikset 966 interior handleset pack?
A screwdriver. The Pismo interior pack goes on with nothing else, which is why swapping inside trim across a batch of units is a quick job for maintenance staff, no drilling or new door prep.
