Kwikset 966HFLRDT-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Kwikset 966HFL Halifax interior pack work on its own as a lock?
No. The 966HFL Halifax lever and deadbolt interior pack is interior trim only, and the lever itself is non-functioning. You need a matching Kwikset exterior pack to make the opening lock and latch, and keys are ordered separately. The deadbolt is thrown and retracted by the interior turn piece.
2) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand version of the Kwikset 966HFL Halifax lever?
Neither. The Halifax lever is fully reversible, so one part covers both left hand and right hand doors and you set the direction at install. Nothing to specify on the order form beyond finish and rose shape.
3) What do I have to choose when ordering the Kwikset 966HFL interior pack?
Two choices: finish and rose shape. Finishes run 510 Venetian Bronze, 619 Satin Nickel, 626 Satin Chrome, 625 Polished Chrome, and 622 Matte Black. Each of those five is offered with either a round rose or a square rose, so the round or square trim plate is a free pick against any finish. Match the finish to your exterior handleset pack, and the rose shape to the styling on the rest of the openings.
4) My exterior handleset is Schlage, not Kwikset. Can I use the Halifax interior pack with it?
No. The 966HFL is cut for Kwikset Signature Series 800 and 687 handlesets, and inside trim packs are brand and series specific. For a Schlage handleset, the equivalent inside half is the Schlage JH59 Broadway lever inside trim with the Collins deadbolt thumbturn, which is entrance function and fits 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.
5) I have a door thicker than 1-3/4 inch. Which interior handleset trim covers that?
For thicker doors, the Weslock 2100 Julienne interior single cylinder handleset trim and the Weslock 1405 interconnected handleset dummy interior trim are both rated 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Weslock 6205 Utica Woodward interior dummy handleset trim covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. On the Schlage side, the FC59 Alexandria glass knob interior trim pack with deadbolt thumbturn goes 1-5/8 inch to 2-3/4 inch, the widest range in the group. Note the function difference: the 2100 Julienne is an Entry function, while the 6205 and the 1405 are dummy trim with no deadbolt turn action.
6) What is the closest equivalent to a Kwikset 966HFL Halifax interior pack if I need an inside handleset trim with a deadbolt thumbturn?
The Schlage Residential JH59 Broadway lever inside trim for handleset with Collins deadbolt thumbturn is the closest match in intent: it is inside trim for a handleset with a deadbolt thumbturn, carries an Entrance product function, and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Kwikset 966HFL Halifax and Deadbolt Interior Pack is also an Entrance-function lever interior pack whose deadbolt is operated by an interior turn piece. The differences to check before you order are the lever design and the handleset family each one is built to mate with, since interior packs are matched to their own exterior handleset.
7) I need a handed interior handleset trim for a left-hand door. What are my options?
The Weslock 7900 left hand Carlow interior single cylinder handleset trim for Greystone or Rockford is built specifically for left-hand doors, is a Single Cylinder function, and fits 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. If handing is not something you want to specify at order time, the Kwikset 966HFL Halifax and Deadbolt Interior Pack is reversible and installs on both right-handed and left-handed doors, so one part number covers either swing across a building.
8) Can I put a Schlage or Weslock interior trim pack on a Kwikset Signature Series handleset?
No. Interior packs are matched to the exterior handleset they were designed for. The Kwikset 966HFL Halifax and Deadbolt Interior Pack is built for Kwikset Signature Series 800 and 687 handlesets and must be paired with a Kwikset exterior pack. The Weslock 7900 Carlow interior trim, for example, is specified for Greystone or Rockford exteriors, and the Schlage JH59 Broadway inside trim is built around the Collins deadbolt thumbturn. Match the interior pack to its own manufacturer's exterior handleset rather than mixing brands on one door.
9) Is the Kwikset Halifax interior pack rated for a commercial building or is it a residential lock?
Residential. It carries ANSI/BHMA Grade AAA, which is the top residential rating for security, durability and finish, and the function is entry/office. For a commercial corridor or a code-driven institutional opening you want a Grade 1 or Grade 2 commercial lockset instead, not this trim.
10) What tools do I need to install a Kwikset 966HFL interior pack, and does the door need new prep?
A screwdriver is all it takes. The pack mounts to the existing Kwikset 800 or 687 handleset prep, so if you are swapping the inside trim on a door that already carries one of those handlesets there is no new boring. Turn a unit in minutes, which is what matters when you are doing a run of doors.
11) I manage apartments and want the same lever on every unit door. Does the Kwikset Halifax interior pack help keep finishes consistent?
Yes, and that is the usual reason to buy it. The Halifax lever pack comes in the same five finishes across both rose shapes, so you can standardize a building on one finish and one trim profile. The lever is reversible, so you stock one part number for both door hands instead of two. Note that the antimicrobial surface treatment on this hardware is claimed to keep it 99.9 percent cleaner than unprotected surfaces, which comes up in high touch common area doors.
12) Is there a fire rated version of this Kwikset entrance trim?
An optional 1/3 hour UL fire rating is available for all functions except the 802, 819 and 502. If the opening is a rated door, that option has to be specified rather than assumed.
13) For a rental unit where the inside trim only needs to look right and does not need to lock, what is a simpler option than the Kwikset 966HFL?
The Weslock 6205 Utica Woodward interior dummy handleset trim covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch and is a Dummy function, and the Weslock 1405 interconnected handleset dummy interior trim covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, also Dummy. The Schlage Residential F59 Accent lever interior pack is a Grade 2 dummy for doors 1-5/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. Any of these gives you a matching inside lever or knob without a deadbolt turn piece. The Kwikset 966HFL Halifax pack, by contrast, carries an Entry/Office lock function with an interior turn piece, which is what you want when the tenant needs to throw the bolt from inside.
14) I want a knob instead of a lever on the inside of my handleset. What should I look at?
The Kwikset 966HFL Halifax and Deadbolt Interior Pack is a lever. For a knob with a deadbolt thumbturn, the Schlage Residential FC59 Alexandria glass knob interior trim pack with deadbolt thumbturn is the peer to look at; it is Grade 2 and fits doors 1-5/8 inch to 2-3/4 inch, though it is listed with a Dummy product function. The Weslock 6205 Utica Woodward interior dummy handleset trim is another non-lever option for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Confirm which exterior handleset family the inside trim is designed to pair with before ordering, since these packs are not interchangeable across manufacturers.
15) How do the grades compare between the Kwikset 966HFL interior pack and the Schlage residential interior trim packs?
The Kwikset 966HFL Halifax and Deadbolt Interior Pack is certified ANSI/BHMA Grade AAA, the residential grading scale that rates security, durability and finish separately. Among the Schlage residential comparables, the F59 Accent lever interior pack and the FC59 Alexandria glass knob interior trim pack are both Grade 2, and the JH59 Broadway lever inside trim is Grade 3. These are different rating scales -- Grade AAA is the residential three-attribute certification, while Grade 2 and Grade 3 are the ANSI/BHMA operational grades -- so read them as two different ways of describing the product rather than one continuous ladder.
