Kwikset 971MILRDT-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I need to order a left-hand or right-hand version of the Milan interior pack?
Neither. The Milan interior trim is fully reversible and works on right-hand and left-hand doors, so handing is not something you specify when ordering. That is a difference from some competing handleset trim, such as the Weslock 7900 Carlow interior trim, which is sold as a left-hand part.
2) What is the closest equivalent to the Kwikset 971MIL Milan interior pack if the door already has Schlage hardware?
The Schlage Residential JH59 Broadway is the nearest match. Like the Kwikset 971MIL, it is an interior trim pack for a handleset with a deadbolt thumbturn, and it carries an Entrance function the same as the 971MIL. The JH59 is a lever trim in Schlage's J Series and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Kwikset 971MIL is a lever interior pack in the Signature Series, is fully reversible for right or left hand doors, and is built for Signature Series 814 and 818 handlesets, so it keys and mounts to Kwikset exterior packs rather than Schlage ones.
3) My door is thicker than standard - about 2 inches. Is the Kwikset 971MIL Milan the right interior pack?
For a 2 inch door, look at the Weslock trims: the 2100 Julienne interior single cylinder handleset trim in the Traditionale series and the 7900 Carlow interior single cylinder trim both cover 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Schlage FC59 Alexandria interior trim pack with deadbolt thumbturn covers 1-5/8 inch to 2-3/4 inch. The Kwikset 971MIL Milan is built specifically to pair with Kwikset Signature Series 814 and 818 exterior handleset packs, so it is the choice when the exterior half is Kwikset.
4) What options do I have to pick when ordering the 971MIL Milan interior pack?
Two choices: rose shape and finish. The rose comes round or square, and the finishes are 510 Venetian Bronze, 619 Satin Nickel, 625 Polished Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome, and 622 Matte Black. Every finish is offered in both rose shapes.
5) How does the inside of the Kwikset Milan handleset trim lock?
Locking is done from the inside with a push button on the interior of the lock, and the deadbolt has its own interior turn piece. The function is entry/office, so the exterior is keyed while the inside always gives free egress by turning the lever.
6) I want a lever interior trim for a handleset but not Kwikset. What else is there?
The closest functional peer is the Schlage Residential JH59 Broadway lever inside trim with Collins deadbolt thumbturn, which is also an entrance-function handleset interior trim and is listed for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Schlage's F59 Accent lever interior pack is a dummy function instead, so it does not include a working deadbolt turn. On thicker doors, Weslock's 2100 Julienne entry interior handleset trim covers 1-3/4 to 2 inch.
7) Can I swap the Milan lever for a different style on my Kwikset 818 handleset?
Yes. Kwikset builds the 971 interior pack in a range of levers and knobs for 818 handlesets, including Arroyo and Hancock and Pismo knobs and Halifax, Katella, Lisbon, Montreal, Singapore, Tripoli, Tustin, Breton, Casey and Halifax RCT levers. Milan is the contemporary lever in that group, so if you are matching a traditional door you may want one of the others.
8) Is the Schlage F59 Accent interior pack a drop-in substitute for the Kwikset 971MIL Milan?
No. The Schlage Residential F59 Accent lever interior pack is a Dummy function trim for doors 1-5/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick in the F Series. The Kwikset 971MIL Milan is an Entrance interior pack that includes a deadbolt turn piece and comes with 2 keys, and it mates to Kwikset Signature Series 814 and 818 handlesets. The two are not interchangeable in either function or handleset platform.
9) How does the certification on the Kwikset 971MIL Milan compare to the Schlage residential interior trims?
The Kwikset 971MIL Milan interior pack is certified ANSI/BHMA Grade AAA for residential security, durability and finish, and it meets ADA/ANSI A117.1 requirements. Among the Schlage residential interior trims, the F59 Accent and FC59 Alexandria are Grade 2 and the JH59 Broadway is Grade 3. For a spec that calls out a lever meeting ADA A117.1, the 971MIL is the one that states it.
10) I only need interior trim for appearance, with no thumbturn. What should I use instead of the Kwikset 971MIL?
Use a dummy interior trim instead. The Weslock 1405 is an interconnected handleset dummy interior trim in the Traditionale Series for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick, and the Weslock 6205 Utica Woodward is a dummy interior handleset trim fitting 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. The Kwikset 971MIL is an Entrance-function interior pack whose deadbolt is operated by an interior turn piece, so it is the wrong choice where no thumbturn is wanted.
11) Which interior handleset trim is handed, and which one works on either swing?
The Kwikset 971MIL Milan interior pack is fully reversible and suits both right and left handed doors, so a single part number covers either swing. By contrast the Weslock 7900 Carlow interior single cylinder handleset trim is a left hand part, so the swing has to be confirmed before ordering. For a fleet of doors with mixed swings, the reversible Kwikset pack keeps the order to one line.
12) Do I get keys with the 971MIL interior pack, or do I buy them separately?
The pack ships with 2 keys. Note that the interior pack alone will not give you a working keyed entry, you still need the matching Kwikset exterior pack. Installation itself needs nothing more than a screwdriver.
13) For a knob interior trim rather than a lever, what is comparable to the Kwikset 971MIL Milan?
The Schlage Residential FC59 Alexandria is a glass knob interior trim pack with a deadbolt thumbturn, covering doors 1-5/8 inch to 2-3/4 inch thick in the FC Series. The Kwikset 971MIL is a lever interior pack in a contemporary style, so the FC59 is the option when a knob and a traditional glass look are wanted instead of a lever.
