2) What is a good alternative to the Kwikset 973 interior handleset trim if I'm not on a Kwikset handleset?
Interior packs are brand specific, so match the trim to the handleset already on the door. For Schlage, the JH59 Broadway lever inside trim with Collins deadbolt thumbturn is the handleset inside trim, an entrance function fitting 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. On Weslock, the 6205 Utica Woodward dummy handleset trim covers 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the 1405 interconnected dummy interior trim covers 1-3/4 to 2 inch. Those thicker ranges matter if you're working on a solid entry door heavier than a standard 1-3/4 inch leaf.
3) I only want to change the look of my inside handle, do I have to replace the whole handleset?
No. The 973 interior packs swap the inside trim on an existing Kwikset 819 handleset, so you can change the Tustin lever for another 973 style, or change finish, without touching the exterior grip or the keying. Screwdriver job. If you're changing brands, though, you replace the whole set, since interior packs mount to their own manufacturer's exterior.
4) Do I need to order the Tustin interior pack left hand or right hand?
Order either one, it works out the same. The Tustin interior pack is fully reversible for right and left handed doors, and both LH and RH are offered in all four finishes: Venetian Bronze, Satin Nickel, Polished Brass and Matte Black. Handing on a handleset is which way the door swings viewed from outside, but you're not locked into a choice here the way you would be with a mortise lock.
5) How does the door actually lock if the Tustin interior lever doesn't turn?
Locking is by the turn piece on the inside of the lock, not by the lever. The lever is a pull only, so nobody is retracting a latch with it. That is the normal arrangement on a handleset: thumbpiece and cylinder outside, turn piece inside.
6) What finishes does the Kwikset 973TNL Tustin interior pack come in, and will it match my other Kwikset doors?
Four finishes: Satin Nickel (619, Kwikset code 15), Venetian Bronze (510, code 11P), Polished Brass (605, code 3) and Matte Black (622, code 514). An optional 1/3 hour UL fire rating is available across the functions in this line, with the exception of the 802, 819 and 502 functions. Since this trim is made for the 819 handleset, treat a fire rated opening as a different specification and use a listed fire door lockset for that opening.
9) What's the difference between a dummy interior pack and one with a deadbolt thumbturn?
A dummy pack, which is what the Tustin 973TNL is, gives you a pull and the turn piece for the lock itself, with no separate deadbolt trim. Packs like the Schlage FC59 Alexandria glass knob interior trim include a deadbolt thumbturn as part of the trim, and the Schlage JH59 Broadway pairs its lever with a Collins deadbolt thumbturn. If your handleset has a separate deadbolt above the grip, you want a trim that includes that thumbturn.
10) What tools do I need to install a Kwikset 973 interior handleset pack?
A screwdriver. The interior pack mounts to the exterior handleset's mounting posts, so there is no boring or chiseling involved if the 819 is already on the door, and swapping one 973 style for another is a same-tools job.
