Kwikset 488LRLSQTLH-15 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does a half dummy lever actually do, and is the Kwikset Ladera 488 the right thing for a closet door?
A half dummy is a single surface-mounted lever with no latch and no moving mechanism. The Kwikset Ladera lever with square rose in half dummy form is for interior doors where the door is pushed or pulled and held shut by a ball catch, roller catch or magnetic catch. If you need the door to actually latch, you want a passage set instead, not this.
2) Do I need to bore the door for a Kwikset Ladera half dummy?
No cross bore or edge bore is needed. A half dummy screws to the door face only, so there is no latch prep, no strike and no backset to set. Installation takes a few minutes with a screwdriver.
3) Is the Kwikset 488 half dummy ANSI Grade 3 certified?
The Grade 3 certification on the Ladera line applies to the other functions, not the 488 half dummy. That is normal for dummy trim, since there is no latch or mechanism to cycle test. If a graded product is required by spec, look at a graded dummy such as the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim, which is listed Grade 1, or the BEST 7KC Series 1DT at Grade 2.
4) What is a comparable left hand half dummy lever if the Kwikset Ladera square rose style is not wanted?
The Baldwin Estate 5103 left hand half dummy lever with 5048 rose is a dummy-function left hand half dummy lever in a different trim style. Like the Ladera half dummy, it mounts to one face of the door with no latch. Baldwin also offers the same 5103 half dummy in a right hand version if the opposite hand is needed.
5) I need the same Ladera look but the door actually latches - what should I order instead?
A half dummy has no latch at all, so a door that needs to stay closed needs a passage lever. Non-keyed passage lever options include the Accentra 5301LN Augusta Grade 2, the Arrow GL01 Grade 2 with Sierra lever, and the Bravura Tampa square trim passage leverset in Grade 2 if square rose trim is the priority.
6) Is there a heavier duty dummy lever than the Kwikset Ladera half dummy for a commercial corridor?
The Kwikset Ladera half dummy is a residential product. For commercial traffic, the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed dummy, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever. The BEST 7KC Series 1DT is a Grade 2 medium duty dummy trim if Grade 1 is more than the opening calls for.
7) Does the Ladera lever meet ADA requirements for lever operation?
Kwikset states the Ladera lever meets ADA/ANSI A117.1 requirements. The lever shape is what does that work, since it can be operated without grasping or twisting.
8) What finishes can I get the Kwikset Ladera square rose lever in to match the rest of my doors?
Five finishes: Venetian Bronze, Satin Nickel, Bright Chrome, Satin Chrome and Matte Black. For a building standard, pick the finish already running on your passage and privacy sets so the dummy on the closet doors reads the same.
9) Is this Kwikset lever rated for commercial use in an office building?
The Ladera is a residential line. For multi family unit interiors, apartments and light duty it is fine, but for a commercial corridor or an institutional facility with a graded hardware spec, go to a commercial cylindrical line such as the Falcon K Series or the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series, both listed Grade 1.
10) I need matching levers on a double closet opening. Do I order two half dummies?
Yes, one per door leaf, and check the hand of each. On a pair of doors the two leaves usually take opposite hands so the levers mirror each other. If you want a single door with a lever on both faces instead, that is a full dummy pair, like the Emtek Arts and Crafts dummy pair, not two half dummies.
11) Does a single dummy or dummy pair do the same job as the Kwikset 488 half dummy?
Not quite. The Kwikset 488 Ladera half dummy covers one face of the door only. A dummy pair such as the Emtek Arts and Crafts lever dummy pair or the Emtek Cortina lever dummy pair supplies trim for both faces, which suits a double door or a door with traffic from both sides. Single dummy trims like the BEST 9K 1DT and the Accentra 455LN cover one side, matching the Kwikset half dummy in coverage.
12) What is the closest dummy lever to the Kwikset Ladera half dummy in residential-level grading?
The Callan Bentley dummy lever is a Grade 2 dummy lever, the nearest simple non-commercial alternative in dummy function. The Baldwin Estate 5103 half dummy is another option in the same function without a heavy duty commercial chassis.
13) Can a passage lever be swapped in where a Kwikset Ladera half dummy was installed?
It is not a drop-in. The half dummy fastens to the door face with no latch and no bore-through prep, while passage levers such as the Falcon B101 Grade 2, the Design Hardware J75 Grade 2 flat lever, or the Dexter C1000 Grade 1 passage require a full cylindrical bore and latch prep with a strike in the frame. Expect to prep the door and frame if you change function.
14) The closet needs privacy, not a dummy - what replaces the Kwikset Ladera half dummy?
For a bed or bath door needing a thumbturn, look at the Baldwin Estate 5103 privacy lever with 5048 rose, or the Hager 2540 Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with Withnell lever for a commercial-grade chassis. The Kwikset 488 Ladera half dummy has no locking function at all.
15) What is Microban on the Kwikset Ladera lever and does it replace cleaning?
Microban antimicrobial protection is built into the finish and Kwikset states it keeps the hardware 99.9 percent cleaner than unprotected surfaces. It works on the hardware surface itself and is not a substitute for your normal cleaning routine, which matters for healthcare and hospitality buyers evaluating it against a housekeeping spec.
