1) Will the Kwikset 667 one-sided deadbolt fit my existing door prep with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
Yes. The 667 ships with an adjustable latch that covers both standard residential backsets, 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch, so it drops into either existing bore without a new door prep. Those are the only two backsets you find on residential doors, so if the door was previously bolted, the 667 latch will line up.
2) Is there a keyhole on the outside of the Kwikset 667 deadbolt?
No key on the outside at all. The 667 is a blank plate on the exterior and a thumbturn on the interior, so it can only be thrown or retracted from inside the room. That makes it the right choice for a door you want secured from the inside only, and the wrong choice for any entry door someone needs to unlock from outside.
3) Will the Kwikset 667 latch into the strike plate that's already on my door frame?
The 667 throws a 1 inch bolt and comes with its own round-corner deadbolt strike, so you are not depending on what's in the jamb. If the existing strike is an old shallow one, swap it for the included strike and mortise the jamb for the full 1 inch of bolt. Faceplates on the latch are round corner, which matches the prep left by most factory-bored doors.
4) Should I use a one-sided deadbolt or a single cylinder deadbolt on a rental unit door?
A one-sided bolt like the Kwikset 667 has no exterior keyway, so nobody outside gets in with a key, including you. On a rental entry door that's a problem: you lose lawful access. Use it on interior doors, storage rooms, or a secondary door that is bolted from inside. For a unit entry where you need key access, go with a cylinder x thumbturn bolt such as the Dexter DB2000 Series single cylinder or the Cal-Royal ED500.
5) Is the Kwikset 667 deadbolt strong enough for a commercial building?
It's certified ANSI/BHMA Grade 3, which is the residential tier, and it's catalogued as a residential lock. For a commercial opening or a high-traffic institutional door, step up: the Design Hardware D1 Series is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty bolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 heavy duty deadbolt. Both are built for cycle counts a Grade 3 residential bolt is not rated to.
6) Can I key the Kwikset 667 to match the other locks in the building?
There's nothing to key. The 667 has a blank plate outside and no cylinder, so it can't be brought into a keying system. If the requirement is that this door match your existing keyway, you need a keyed bolt instead: the Hager 3215 and Hager 3115 both come in the Schlage C keyway, or Delaney's LM Series ships less core so you can install your own.
7) What tools do I need to install a Kwikset 667 deadbolt on an already-bored door?
A screwdriver. On a door that already has the deadbolt cross bore and edge bore, the 667 goes in with nothing else, and the adjustable latch handles whether the prep is 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset. The strike is in the box. If the door has never been bored, that's a bore kit job first.
8) What's a one-sided deadbolt for, and when would I use one instead of a normal deadbolt?
A one-sided deadbolt puts a thumbturn on the inside and a flat blank plate on the outside, so the door secures from within and shows no hardware to work on from the other side. Typical uses are back doors, garage-to-house doors, storage and utility rooms, and a second door on a unit that stays bolted. It is not an entry lock, since there's no way to get through it from outside. Arrow's E60 is the commercial-grade version of the same idea, also blank plate by thumbturn.
9) Is there another one-sided deadbolt option if I need a half-bore version?
The Callan Model 205S is a Grade 3 one-sided half-bore deadbolt, which is what you want when the door only has a partial bore or you're not drilling all the way through. The Kwikset 667 is the full-prep one-sided bolt, so on a standard cross-bored door it's the direct fit and the 205S is the answer when the prep isn't there.
10) What finishes does the Kwikset 667 one-sided deadbolt come in?
Four: Venetian Bronze, Satin Nickel, Satin Chrome, and Matte Black. If you're standardizing a building, Satin Nickel and Satin Chrome read closest to the brushed and bright silver trim already on most units, while Venetian Bronze and Matte Black are the darker options for newer builds.
