Kwikset 9250TRS-15S – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Kwikset 9250 Powerbolt keypad deadbolt rated for commercial use, or is it a residential lock?
The 9250 Transitional Powerbolt is a residential lock, certified BHMA Grade 3 for security, durability and finish. Grade 3 is the residential tier, so for an apartment entry door or a single-family rental it is on spec; for a commercial opening that calls for Grade 1 or Grade 2 on the drawing it is not. Cal-Royal's ED500 is also a Grade 3 deadbolt if you want a keyed-only option, and Design Hardware's D1 Series is Grade 1 extra heavy duty if the spec is commercial.
2) Can I rekey the Kwikset Powerbolt 9250 myself to match the other locks on my property?
Yes. The 9250 is a SmartKey deadbolt, so the cylinder can be re-keyed by the owner with the SmartKey tool and a working key, no cylinder removal and no locksmith. For a landlord turning units that means one key can carry across doors already on Kwikset SmartKey. The lock ships with one key, so if you want more than one physical key for the door you order those separately.
3) What comes in the box with the Kwikset 9250 keypad deadbolt, and do I need anything else to install it?
The package is the lock, the 4AL latch, the RCS strike, mounting hardware, one key and instructions. Two things it does not include: the four AA alkaline batteries, and any other tool beyond a screwdriver. Buy the batteries with it. Installation is a screwdriver job and Kwikset's BILT app walks the steps.
4) Will the Kwikset 9250 Powerbolt fit the deadbolt holes already in my door?
It ships with a 4AL adjustable latch, which is the Kwikset adjustable-backset latch, so it covers the two standard residential deadbolt backsets of 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inches without a second part. If your existing deadbolt sits in a standard 2-1/8 inch cross bore, the Powerbolt drops into it. What it will not do is convert a door prepped for a different backset spacing or a non-standard bore. Brinks Raleigh and Mendocino deadbolts are keyed alternatives with a 4-way adjustable backset if you want a mechanical lock in the same opening.
5) What is the closest keypad electronic deadbolt to the Kwikset 9250 Powerbolt if a different brand is required?
The Delaney KP400 is the nearest electronic deadbolt equivalent. Both are keypad-driven electronic deadbolts; the Kwikset 9250 Powerbolt carries BHMA Grade 3 certification and holds 12 user codes plus 2 one-time codes, while the KP400 is a Grade 2 electronic deadbolt in the KP400 Series and adds a programmable remote for operation away from the keypad. If the opening only needs code entry at the door, the Powerbolt covers it; if someone needs to operate the bolt from a distance, the KP400 is the one to spec.
6) What should be used instead of a Kwikset Powerbolt 250 on a commercial opening that needs a Grade 1 deadbolt?
The Powerbolt 250 is a residential-duty electronic deadbolt certified to BHMA Grade 3, so a commercial spec calling for Grade 1 needs a different part. The Accentra D111 is a Grade 1 single cylinder deadbolt with a 2-3/8 inch backset covering 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, cylinder by thumbturn. The Design Hardware D1 Series is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors in a double cylinder function. Both are mechanical, so keypad entry is given up in exchange for the higher grade.
7) What electronic deadbolt should be specified for a multifamily or hotel property instead of a Kwikset Powerbolt 250?
The Powerbolt 250 is a residential keypad deadbolt with 12 user codes and 2 one-time codes managed at the door. For credentialed multifamily and hospitality openings, the Dormakaba Nova-D is an RFID multihousing smart electronic deadbolt, and the Dormakaba Saffire LX-D is an RFID electronic deadbolt with BLE and electronic lock override. Those use RFID credentials rather than keypad codes, which is the difference that matters when doors turn over between residents or guests.
8) Are the Codelocks CL2200 and CL2210 substitutes for a Kwikset Powerbolt 250 keypad deadbolt?
They are code-entry electronic deadbolts but they mount differently, so they are not drop-in alternatives. The Powerbolt 250 is a bored tubular deadbolt supplied with a 4AL latch and RCS strike. The Codelocks CL2200 is an electronic surface deadbolt, medium duty, in a brushed steel finish, and the CL2210 is an electronic mortise deadbolt. A surface unit mounts on the face of the door and a mortise unit needs a pocket cut into the door edge, so either one changes the door prep.
9) What deadbolt keys into an existing Schlage C keyway system if the Kwikset SmartKey cylinder is not wanted?
The Powerbolt 250 uses a Kwikset SmartKey cylinder and ships with one key. For a building already keyed to Schlage C, the Hager 3115 is a Grade 2 cylinder by thumbturn deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Hager 3215 is a single cylinder Grade 2 with a 1 inch throw over the same thickness range, and the Hager 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway and 6-pin cylinder. All three are fire rated.
10) Which deadbolt takes a small format interchangeable core instead of the Kwikset Powerbolt SmartKey cylinder?
The Powerbolt 250 comes with a SmartKey cylinder, which cannot be swapped for an interchangeable core. For a keying system built on SFIC, the Arrow E61 26D IC is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadlock with SFIC prep less core for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Deltana CL200LAIC is a Grade 2 single deadbolt with an interchangeable core and a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Delaney LM Series 301702 is a Grade 1 single cylinder less core deadbolt in dull chrome US26D.
11) Is the Kwikset Powerbolt 250 the right choice for a classroom or a school door?
It is a residential-duty keypad deadbolt, so an institutional classroom opening is better served by a classroom function deadbolt. The Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom deadbolt with an adjustable backset, the Falcon D211 is the Grade 2 medium duty classroom equivalent, and the Hager 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway, 6-pin cylinder, fire rated, for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Classroom function keys from the outside without a thumbturn releasing the bolt from the corridor side.
12) What is the alternative to a Kwikset Powerbolt 250 on a fire rated door?
For an opening where the deadbolt has to carry a fire rating, the Hager 3115, 3215 and 3214 are fire rated deadbolts for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, the 3115 and 3215 in single cylinder Grade 2 and the 3214 in double cylinder Grade 2. The Cal-Royal CRB800 is a Grade 1 heavy duty single cylinder deadbolt with a UL 3-hour fire rated latch. These are mechanical cylinder by thumbturn units rather than keypad locks.
13) How many user codes can the Kwikset Powerbolt 2 SmartCode deadbolt hold?
Twelve user codes plus two one-time codes. The two one-time codes are what makes it work for turnovers and showings: give a code to a cleaner or a contractor, it burns after a single use, and you never have to go back and delete it. For a small landlord with a handful of doors that is usually enough; if you are managing a property that needs RFID credentials or front-desk issuance instead of a keypad, the Dormakaba Nova-D is an RFID multihousing electronic deadbolt built for that.
14) What happens if the batteries die on the Kwikset Powerbolt keypad lock?
You still have a key. The 9250 is a keyed SmartKey deadbolt as well as a keypad lock, and one key comes in the box, so a dead battery is a nuisance and not a lockout. Kwikset rates the four AA alkalines at about 12 months. Keep the key somewhere off the door and swap batteries on a schedule rather than waiting for the low-battery warning.
15) Does the Kwikset Powerbolt 9250 lock itself, and can I stop tenants from using the keypad while a unit is vacant?
Both are built in. Auto lock is customizable, so the deadbolt throws on its own after the door closes rather than depending on anyone to press anything. Vacation mode disables the keypad entirely, which is the setting to use on a vacant unit or a second home so no previously issued code works while you are away. There is also an intrusion alert: three wrong codes shuts the keypad down and sounds an alarm. Locking from outside is one touch, no code needed.
16) Should I put a keypad deadbolt or a standard keyed deadbolt on a rental unit?
It comes down to who holds the credential. A keypad lock like the 9250 Powerbolt lets you issue and revoke a code between tenants without a rekey visit, and it holds 12 user codes plus 2 one-time codes for trades and cleaners. A mechanical deadbolt has no batteries and no programming, which is why it still wins on doors nobody rotates. If you want mechanical, the Dexter DB2000 single cylinder is a Grade 2 deadbolt for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors and the Accentra D111 is a Grade 1 with a 2-3/8 inch backset. Note the 9250 is Grade 3 residential, so a mechanical Grade 1 or 2 is the higher-duty choice if the door sees heavy traffic.
17) What is a good alternative to the Kwikset Powerbolt if I need an electronic deadbolt for a commercial or multi-housing door?
The Powerbolt 9250 is a residential keypad deadbolt, so for commercial and multi-housing openings look at a different class of lock. The Codelocks CL2200 is a medium duty electronic surface deadbolt and the CL2210 is an electronic mortise deadbolt. Dormakaba's Saffire LX-D is an RFID electronic deadbolt with Bluetooth and electronic lock override, and the Nova-D is the RFID multihousing version. If the opening is access-control driven rather than standalone, the DynaLock 1300 Series is a heavy duty mortise electric deadbolt that a system drives.
18) Is there a simpler mechanical deadbolt with the same Grade 3 rating as the Kwikset Powerbolt 250?
Yes. The Powerbolt 250 is BHMA Grade 3 with a keypad and 4x AA battery power. If the keypad is not needed, the Cal-Royal ED500 is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with an adjustable backset for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal LSD is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt over the same thickness range with an ADA ergonomic thumbturn. Both are cylinder by thumbturn, so they key and operate conventionally with no batteries or codes to manage.
19) Which deadbolt matches a Kwikset Powerbolt 250 in transitional styling without the electronics?
The Powerbolt 250 carries transitional trim and comes in Venetian Bronze, Satin Nickel, Matte Black and Polished Brass. For a mechanical partner on secondary doors, the Brinks Raleigh Series E2401 is a transitional round single cylinder deadbolt with a 4 way adjustable backset, and the Bravura 310B Elite is a Grade 2 traditional round deadbolt, both cylinder by thumbturn. For squared contemporary trim instead, the Brinks Mendocino E2402 and the Bravura 310SC Elite are the square-rose equivalents.
20) What deadbolt fits a door thicker than a Kwikset Powerbolt 250 will handle?
For openings thicker than a standard residential door, the Corbin Russwin DL3011 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock rated for 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the Deltana 7312KA2 covers 1-3/8 to 2 inch as a Grade 3 double cylinder. The Dexter DB1000 Series reaches 1-7/8 inch in Grade 1, single or double cylinder. All three are mechanical, so a thick-door application gives up the keypad entry the Powerbolt 250 provides.
21) Can a Dormakaba D900 or DynaLock 1300 replace a Kwikset Powerbolt 250 keypad deadbolt?
Neither is a like-for-like swap. The Powerbolt 250 is a bored tubular deadbolt with an integral keypad, installed with a screwdriver. The Dormakaba D900 is a small case mortise deadbolt, cylinder by thumbturn, keyed different with SC keyways, which requires a mortise pocket. The DynaLock 1300 Series is a heavy duty mortise electric deadbolt, meaning it is released by an access control system over wiring rather than by codes entered at the door.
22) Which deadbolt should go on a door where the outside face must stay blank instead of carrying a Kwikset keypad?
The Powerbolt 250 puts a lighted keypad on the exterior face. Where the outside must be blind, the Arrow E60 is a Grade 2 non-keyed exit deadlock, blank plate by thumbturn, for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Callan 205S is a Grade 3 one-sided half-bore deadbolt, which only bores one face of the door. The Corbin Russwin DL2211 is the Grade 1 cylinder by blank version for 1-3/4 inch doors when the door still needs to key from outside but show no turn inside.
23) Which mechanical deadbolt is a like-for-like backup to the Kwikset Powerbolt 250 across a portfolio of rental doors?
For units where a keypad is not wanted, the mechanical single cylinder Grade 2 deadbolts hold the same door function of key outside, thumbturn inside. The Arrow DBX61 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt, the Dexter DB2000 Series is Grade 2 single cylinder for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal CB160 is a Grade 2 single cylinder with a tamper-resistant cylinder guard. Running one of these alongside the Powerbolt 250 keeps the door operation consistent while the electronic units go on the doors that need code access.
24) What finishes does the Kwikset 9250 Transitional Powerbolt deadbolt come in?
Four: Satin Nickel, Venetian Bronze, Matte Black and Polished Brass. That is the full range on the Transitional trim, so if you are standardizing a building on one look, pick the finish that matches the existing levers and knobs on those doors and keep it consistent across the fleet. BHMA Grade 3 covers finish as well as security and durability, so the finish is tested, not just applied.
