LCN 3034-652 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the LCN 3034 concealed closer fit a 1-3/4 inch interior door?
That is exactly the opening it is built for. The 3034 is a closer concealed in the door itself, machined into a 1-3/4 inch interior door, with sizing covering doors up to 4'0" wide. It is not a surface-mounted unit and it is not intended for exterior openings, so if your door is thinner than 1-3/4 inches or the leaf is wider than 4 feet, this is the wrong model.
2) Do I have to specify handing when ordering an LCN 3034 door closer?
Yes, handing is a required choice. The 3034 is ordered right hand or left hand, with right hand as the default. Because the closer body is mortised into the door and the double lever arm swings to one side, a handed unit cannot be flipped in the field the way a surface closer can. Confirm the swing at the opening before you place the order.
3) Does the LCN 3034 come with a hold-open arm or do I order that separately?
Arm type is a required selection on the 3034: regular arm or hold-open arm. Regular arm is the default configuration. Pick hold-open only where the opening is allowed to stand open, since the closer is UL/cUL listed for self-closing doors without hold-open.
4) Is the LCN 3034 heavy enough for a high traffic corridor door?
It is built around a cast iron cylinder with a 1-1/8 inch forged steel piston and a full-complement bearing, and it carries ANSI/BHMA A156.4 Grade 1 certification, which is the top commercial grade for door closers. LCN rates it for medium- to high-traffic commercial openings. Catalog duty level is listed as medium duty, so for a genuinely punishing exterior or high-abuse opening look at a heavier surface closer instead.
5) Should I use a concealed-in-door closer like the LCN 3034 or a surface mounted closer?
Choose the 3034 when the closer needs to disappear into the door leaf, which is usually an aesthetics or vandal-exposure call in offices, schools, healthcare and retail lobbies. The trade-off is preparation: the door has to be machined for the cylinder and the frame prepped for the arm, so it is far easier to specify on new doors than to retrofit an existing unprepped leaf. If the door is already hung and unprepped, a surface mounted closer is the practical route.
6) What size closer is the LCN 3034 and can the closing force be adjusted?
The 3034 is a size 4 closer, which is where the trailing digit in the model number comes from. Closing speed and latching speed are regulated separately through tamper-resistant regulating screws, so you can slow the general sweep without giving up the last few inches of latching action.
7) What finishes does the LCN 3034 plated closer come in, and what part is actually plated?
Six plated finishes are offered: 632 bright brass, 633 satin brass, 639 satin bronze, 646 satin nickel, 651 bright chrome and 652 satin chrome. The plating is on the exposed arm and fasteners, since the cylinder itself is buried in the door. That is the piece you match to the lever trim and hinges on the rest of the opening.
8) Does the LCN 3034 have a delayed action feature?
No delay function on the 3034. It closes on a standard sweep with independently adjustable closing and latching speed. If the opening needs extra dwell time for carts or wheelchair traffic, you need a closer that specifically lists delayed action.
9) Is the LCN 3034 Buy American compliant for a government job?
Yes, the 3034 is BAA qualified, which matters on federal and municipal work where Buy American Act sourcing is written into the spec. It is a commercial-grade product line, used on government and municipal buildings among other facility types.
10) Are mounting screws included with the LCN 3034 concealed closer?
The closer ships with wood and machine screws, so it covers both a wood door and hollow metal or aluminum prep. The door and frame preparation itself is on you: LCN publishes installation instructions and templates for the 3030 Series, and the machining has to match before the unit goes in.
11) Will an LCN 3034 hold its adjustment in an unheated building or a cold stairwell?
It uses all-weather hydraulic fluid, so the closing speed stays consistent through temperature swings rather than dragging when it gets cold. That said, it is specified as an interior door closer concealed in a 1-3/4 inch leaf, so use it on interior openings even in unconditioned space, not on the exterior door.
