LCN 4040XP-62A 652 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the LCN 4040XP-62A auxiliary shoe actually do on a door closer?
It's a mounting shoe, not a closer or an arm. The 62A widens the footprint the closer body sits on so the load spreads across more of the door and puts less stress on the mounting points. You order it alongside an LCN 4040XP closer for high traffic openings where the mounting is taking a beating, not as a standalone door control.
2) How much top rail do I need for an LCN 4040XP-62A shoe?
7 13/16 inches (198 mm) of top rail. That is the hard cutoff. If the door's top rail measures less than that, the shoe will not land properly and you need a different mounting approach for the 4040XP, typically a bracket or a top jamb arrangement rather than this shoe. Measure the rail on the door before ordering, not the frame.
3) Does the 4040XP-62A replace the -62PA shoe?
Yes. The 62A supersedes the -62PA for parallel arm mounting of a regular arm with an overhead holder or stop. If a spec or an old order calls out -62PA on a 4040XP parallel arm application, the 62A is the current part for it.
4) Will the 62A auxiliary shoe fit an LCN 4050 or 1460 closer?
No. The 62A shoe is built for the LCN 4040XP within the 4000 Series. It is not a universal shoe. If you're mounting a different LCN closer body, order the shoe called out for that closer rather than assuming the 62A crosses over.
5) I'm mounting an LCN 4040XP parallel arm with an overhead stop. What shoe do I order?
The 4040XP-62A. That is exactly the configuration it covers: parallel arm mounting of a regular arm with an overhead holder or stop, replacing the older -62PA. Confirm the door gives you 7 13/16 inches of top rail before you commit to that mounting.
6) What finishes does the LCN 4040XP-62A auxiliary shoe come in?
Eight: 652 satin chrome, 689 aluminum, 690 statuary bronze, 691 light bronze, 693 gloss black, 695 dark bronze, 696 brass, and an aluminum SRI (special rust inhibitor). Match the shoe to the closer cover finish so the assembly reads as one piece on the door. The SRI option is the one to pick for exterior or damp openings where standard paint would rust out.
7) Does adding the 4040XP-62A shoe affect ADA compliance on the opening?
The 62A is ADA compliant, so it does not put the opening out of compliance. Compliance on the door still comes down to the closer adjustment, the opening force and closing speed you set on the 4040XP itself. The shoe is a mounting component, not what determines the force at the door.
8) Do I need the auxiliary shoe if I already have an LCN 4040XP closer installed?
Not for a standard install. The shoe is an add on for openings where the closer needs a wider bearing surface, typically heavy traffic doors in schools, hospitals, retail and warehouses where the mounting screws are working loose or the door is seeing constant cycling. On a light duty office door with a sound top rail, the standard mounting is enough.
9) Is the LCN 4040XP-62A shoe suitable for a residential door?
It's a commercial part. The 62A is built for high traffic commercial and industrial openings and is ordered against a 4040XP closer, which is itself a heavy duty commercial closer. On a house door it's more hardware than the opening needs, and the 7 13/16 inch top rail requirement rules out a lot of residential doors anyway.
