LCN 4640-79LR-AL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the LCN 4640-79LR long rod and shoe, and when do I need it instead of the standard rod and shoe?
It's the rod and shoe half of the closer arm, the piece that lands on the frame (or door) and links back to the closer body. The 79LR is the long version, used when the reveal is deep enough that a standard-length rod and shoe cannot reach and the arm won't set up correctly. On a normal shallow reveal you don't need it, order the standard rod and shoe. Measure the reveal on the opening first; that dimension is what decides between the two.
2) Will the 4640-79LR long rod and shoe work with my LCN door closer?
The 79LR long rod and shoe is built for LCN 4640 Series closers. If the closer on the door is a 4640, it's the right part. For any other LCN family (a 4040, a 1460, or an automatic operator), order the rod and shoe listed for that series instead, since arm geometry is not shared across LCN closer families.
3) Is the LCN 4640 long rod and shoe a complete arm, or do I still need the main arm?
It's a component, not a full arm assembly. The 79LR supplies the rod and the shoe only; the forearm and the closer-side arm section stay as they are. Buy it as a replacement when the existing rod and shoe are damaged, or when you're converting an existing 4640 installation to reach a deeper reveal. If the whole arm is bent or the shoe is torn out of the frame, price a complete arm rather than this piece alone.
4) Do I need a template or instructions to install an LCN long rod and shoe on a deep reveal?
Yes, and LCN publishes them. The shoe location on a deep reveal is not a guess, it comes off the closer template for the mounting type you're using, and LCN maintains a templates and instructions index covering its closers and operators. Pull the sheet for the 4640 and the mounting you have (regular arm, top jamb, or parallel arm) before you drill the frame, because a mislocated shoe changes the arm angle and the closing force.
5) What finish does the LCN 4640-79LR rod and shoe come in?
689 aluminum is the only finish offered on the 79LR long rod and shoe. That's LCN's standard sprayed aluminum, so it matches a 689 closer body and cover on the same opening. If your closers are painted a dark bronze or a custom color, the rod and shoe will not match out of the box and needs to be finished on site.
6) Is the LCN 4640 rod and shoe rated for commercial door traffic or is it a residential part?
Commercial. The 79LR rod and shoe is a commercial door control part, which is what you want on office, school, healthcare and multi-tenant openings where the closer cycles all day. It isn't a light-duty residential component.
