Leviton 49605-28P – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the Leviton 49605-28P used for in a low-voltage rough-in?
The 49605-28P is a 28 inch structured media enclosure. It is the central box where the network, audio, video, and telecom cabling for a home or light commercial job terminates, so patch panels, splitters, and low-voltage modules all live behind one access point instead of being scattered across several locations. Typical use is whole-home structured cabling, data distribution, and A/V wiring hubs in new construction or a renovation.
2) Will the 49605-28P accept Leviton patch panels and structured wiring modules?
Yes. The 49605-28P is built to work with compatible Leviton structured media components, so patch panels, splitters, and low-voltage modules from that system mount inside it. Plan your module layout before you order, since the interior space is what determines how much you can stack in one can and how much room you leave for later additions.
3) I need an enclosure for a wet or outdoor location instead of a structured media can - what should I use?
The Leviton 49605-28P is an indoor structured media enclosure for network, audio, video, and telecom wiring in homes and light-commercial buildings. For locations where the enclosure itself has to hold out weather or washdown, look at a rated steel enclosure instead: the Rittal WM series is offered as a NEMA 3R one-door wall mount in carbon steel, the ABB Q-Line TQD225R is a NEMA 3R 225A enclosure, and the Square D EM3570ENC is a NEMA 4X enclosure built for PowerLogic EM357x meters. Those are power and metering enclosures, so any low-voltage structured wiring would still need its own termination point.
4) Can a Rittal FlatBox 9U wall-mount enclosure be used instead of the Leviton 49605-28P for a structured cabling hub?
They solve different problems. The Leviton 49605-28P is a 28-inch structured media enclosure intended to house network, audio, video, and telecommunications wiring for a home or light-commercial structured cabling system, with room to mount patch panels, splitters, and low-voltage modules behind a single access point. The Rittal 7507110 FlatBox is a 19-inch rack-format wall-mount enclosure in the FlatBox series with 9U of carbon steel rack space. If the gear you are mounting is rack-ear equipment sized in rack units, the FlatBox fits it; if you are mounting Leviton structured media modules and bracket-mounted low-voltage components, the 49605-28P is the enclosure built around them.
5) What is the difference between the Leviton 49605-28P and a Rittal WM series wall-mount enclosure?
The Leviton 49605-28P is a low-voltage structured media enclosure - its interior is laid out for patch panels, splitters, and structured wiring modules that consolidate network, audio, video, and telecom runs into one centralized location. The Rittal WM series, including the 1034250-11, is a single-door carbon steel wall-mounted enclosure, and the WM series is also offered in a NEMA 3R one-door configuration for outdoor or rain-exposed locations. Choose the WM when the requirement is a rated general-purpose steel box for electrical or control components; choose the 49605-28P when the requirement is an organized termination point for a structured cabling system.
6) What model number do I order for the 28 inch Leviton media enclosure?
Order Leviton 49605-28P. That is the manufacturer part number, and the 28P suffix denotes the 28 inch enclosure size in Leviton's structured media lineup.
7) If I am wiring a whole house, is 28 inches the right enclosure size or should I go bigger?
A 28 inch can gives generous interior room for structured wiring components plus space for future expansion, which covers most single-family builds where you are landing a router, a patch panel, and coax or A/V splitters in one place. If you are feeding a large home with many drops, multiple distribution amps, and rack-style gear, size up rather than filling this one to capacity, because an enclosure with no headroom means a second can later.
8) For a control panel build rather than a structured wiring hub, what enclosure should I specify instead of the Leviton 49605-28P?
The 49605-28P is sized and laid out for structured cabling components, not for mounting controls. For a control build, the Rittal 1338000 AX compact control cabinet is a carbon steel cabinet rated IP66/NEMA 12, and the ABB Formula A2ENCL250 series is a surface-mount electrical enclosure. Both are intended to carry control and electrical components; the Leviton enclosure stays with the patch panels, splitters, and low-voltage modules it was built around.
