Leviton 8050 Thermoset Midway Toggle Switch Wallplate

The Leviton Thermoset Midway wallplate is a device mount cover engineered for toggle switch openings, available in 1-Gang and 2-Gang configurations to match standard midway toggle switch layouts. Molded from rugged thermoset material, this wallplate is built to resist cracking and everyday wear in both residential and commercial settings while holding a clean, professional appearance. Its device mount design allows the plate to secure directly to the mounting strap of the installed toggle switch or switches rather than to the outlet box, producing a flush, snug fit across the 1-Gang to 2-Gang range. Because each plate in the family is sized specifically for its toggle switch combination, installers can rely on consistent alignment with the mounting strap of each device, reducing gaps and misfit issues that are common with universal or oversized wallplates.

Leviton 80501-W – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the Leviton 80501-W and 80509-W wallplates?
Gang count is the only difference. The 80501-W is the 1-gang version, covering a single toggle switch, and the 80509-W is the 2-gang, covering two toggle switches side by side under one plate. Both are the midway size, white, thermoset toggle plates. Count the switches in the opening and order accordingly.
2) Will a midway wallplate cover a bigger opening than a standard plate?
Midway sits between standard and oversized. The Leviton 8050 is a midway toggle plate, so it gives you a bit more coverage than a standard plate around the cut in the drywall, which helps on retrofits where the old plate left paint lines or a slightly ragged opening. If you need the plate to line up with existing standard plates on the same wall, midway will look noticeably larger.
3) Does this Leviton wallplate screw to the switch or to the electrical box?
To the switch. The 8050 is a device mount plate, so the screws go into the mounting strap of the toggle switch itself, not into the box ears. Pre-drilled holes line up with standard toggle straps. If your box has no device in it yet, or you are covering a blank box, a device mount toggle plate is the wrong part.
4) Will the Leviton 8050 fit a decora or rocker switch?
No. It is cut for toggle switches only, with the narrow rectangular toggle opening. A decora style rocker, GFCI, or paddle switch needs a decora/GFCI opening plate. Duplex receptacles also need their own plate.
5) Is thermoset better than plastic wallplates for a commercial corridor or rental turnover?
Thermoset is the harder of the common wallplate materials. Once molded it does not soften, so it resists cracking, impact, and discoloration better than a flexible thermoplastic plate, and the smooth face wipes clean. For apartment turns, school corridors, and light commercial where plates get bumped by carts and cleaned often, that is the reason to spec it over a nylon or PVC plate.
6) What color does the Leviton 8050 midway toggle plate come in?
White only. If you are standardizing a building, the whole 1-gang and 2-gang range is the same white finish, so plates ordered at different times match across openings. For ivory, light almond, gray, or black walls you would need a different Leviton plate series.
7) Do Leviton 8050 wallplates come with mounting screws?
The plates are supplied with pre-drilled mounting holes that align with standard toggle switch straps. Nothing else is needed to finish a switch that is already installed and set flush; you are fastening into the strap screw holes on the device.
