Leviton 1203-PLG – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Leviton 1203-PLG pilot light switch need a neutral in the box?
Yes, a neutral conductor has to be present for the pilot light to work. The illuminated toggle glows when the switch is ON, and that indicator draws from neutral. In older boxes on a switch loop with only travelers and a hot, the switch will still make and break the load, but the pilot will not light. Check the box before you buy: if there is no white conductor bundled in there, you want a plain 3-way toggle instead.
2) What is the difference between Leviton 1203-PLG and 1223-PLG?
Amperage. The 1203-PLG is the 15A version and the 1223-PLG is the 20A version. Both are 120V 3-way toggle pilot light switches in green, otherwise identical. Match the switch to the branch circuit breaker: 15A device on a 15A circuit, 20A device on a 20A circuit. Contractors standardizing a building on 20A commercial circuits should be ordering the 1223-PLG.
3) Can I use this Leviton pilot light switch as a single pole instead of 3-way?
No. This is a 3-way device, wired with a common terminal and two travelers, so it is meant for controlling one load from two locations. Dropping it into a single-pole opening leaves you with a terminal you cannot use and a pilot that will not behave. For a one-location switch with a lit toggle you need a single pole pilot light switch, not the 1203-PLG or 1223-PLG.
4) Do I still need a green grounding pigtail with a self-grounding Leviton switch?
Not when it lands in a properly grounded metal box. The self-grounding yoke carries the bond through the mounting screw to the box, so the separate jumper from device to box is unnecessary. In a nonmetallic box you still bond the device green screw to the circuit equipment ground the normal way, because there is nothing for the yoke to bond to. That is the install time this device saves an electrician on a metal-box commercial job.
5) Can I put a Leviton pilot light switch on a 277V lighting circuit?
No. This is a 120V device only. A 277V commercial lighting branch circuit, common on fluorescent and LED runs off a 480/277 panel, needs a switch rated for 277 volts. Putting a 120V device on that circuit is a fire and a code violation. Confirm the panel voltage before you order, since the toggle looks identical either way.
6) Will replacing one of my two 3-way switches with this pilot switch work, or do I need to change both?
One is enough. In a 3-way circuit you only need the indication at one location, so swap the switch at whichever spot people actually stand, usually the one at the bottom of the stairs or by the door. Leave the other 3-way as is. The catch is the neutral: the pilot device must go in the box that has a neutral available, so pick the location by which box has a white conductor in it, not by convenience.
7) Where does a pilot light 3-way switch actually make sense on a commercial job?
Anywhere the load is out of sight of the person operating it, controlled from two places. Stairwell and corridor lighting, exterior and parking lot fixtures, basement and attic lights, crawlspaces, mechanical rooms, exhaust fans. The lit toggle tells you the circuit is energized without walking the run, which is why property managers use them to stop lights burning unnoticed for weeks. If the fixture is in the same room and visible, the pilot buys you nothing and a standard 3-way is the cheaper spec.
8) Can I back-wire this Leviton spec grade switch, and what do I torque the terminals to?
Both back-wire and side-wire terminations are supported, so you can land conductors whichever way the box depth and wire count allow. Terminal screws are torqued to 12 to 14 pound inches. That number is not optional on a spec grade commercial install, since loose terminations are what cause heat rise and failed inspections. Use a torque screwdriver rather than feel.
9) Is this Leviton toggle switch rated for a hot mechanical room or a high-temperature location?
Operating temperature is rated to 65 degrees Celsius, with a 30 degree Celsius temperature rise under load. That covers boiler rooms, attic access, and enclosed equipment spaces where ambient runs well above room temperature. Body and cover are thermoplastic with a polycarbonate toggle, and the plastics are rated V-2 per UL 94 for flammability.
10) Will a green Leviton pilot switch match the ivory and white devices already in my building?
No, and that is usually the point. The green toggle is a visual flag that this opening controls something remote or something you want people to notice, so it deliberately reads different from the ivory or white devices on the rest of the wall. If you are standardizing a corridor on one look, put the green pilot device only at the openings that need the indication and keep the standard color everywhere else. Wall plates are ordered separately and can be run in whatever color the rest of the floor uses.
11) What makes an extra heavy duty spec grade switch different from a residential grade one?
Contact material and construction. This device uses silver alloy contacts, which is what holds up under repeated switching on a commercial duty cycle rather than pitting and failing. It is built as an AC quiet switch, so the mechanism does not snap audibly in an office or a patient room. Residential grade devices use lighter contacts and a lighter yoke and will not take the cycle count of a stairwell or a retail sales floor. For hospitality, healthcare, education, and multifamily common areas, spec grade is the right call.
12) Does the Leviton 1223-PLG meet the standard dimensions for a standard wall plate and gang box?
The device is built to ANSI C-73, the configuration and dimensional standard for wiring devices, so the strap and toggle land where a standard toggle wall plate and a standard gang box expect them. It drops into an existing single-gang toggle opening and takes a standard toggle plate. Dielectric strength is 1500 volts.
