Leviton 2341 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the two Leviton locking plug options, 20A 2-pole and 30A 3-pole?
Two devices are offered. The 30A 3-pole version is Leviton 28W76, the L16-30P rated 480V 3-phase with a 4-wire configuration and yellow housing. The other is Leviton 2341, a 20A 2-pole device. Pick by the circuit you are landing on: a 480V 3-phase branch takes the 30A 3-pole plug, not the 20A.
2) I need a locking plug but my circuit is 250V single phase, not 480V. What should I look at instead?
A 480V 3-phase L16-30P plug is the wrong device for a single phase 250V circuit. For a two-pole three-wire 250V run, the Eaton L6-30 locking plug in nylon is the commercial-grade equivalent to look at. For 125V 15A cord ends, Bryant makes the 4722N angle locking plug in NEMA L5-15P.
3) How many conductors do I land in the Leviton L16-30P plug?
Four. It is a 4-wire, 3-pole device: three phase conductors plus a ground. There is no neutral terminal in the L16 configuration, so if your load needs a neutral for 277V line-to-neutral, this is not the right plug.
4) What locking plug should I use if my 480V load only needs two poles instead of three?
The Leviton 28W76 is a 3-pole, 4-wire NEMA L16-30P device for 480V 3-phase service, so it will not mate with a 2-pole configuration. For a two-pole, three-wire 30A locking connection, the Eaton L6-30 locking plug is a nylon-bodied two-pole three-wire device in the L6-30 series. L6-30 is a single-phase configuration with two hot blades and a ground, so confirm the receptacle on the machine or drop is L6-30R before ordering, since L16-30 and L6-30 blade patterns are not interchangeable.
5) I need a locking plug above 480V or above 30A - what takes over from the Leviton 28W76?
The Leviton locking plug tops out at 480V, 30A in its L16-30P configuration. When the circuit exceeds that, the Eaton 7765 industrial armored locking plug is rated 50A at 600V (250Vdc) and uses back-wiring terminations. It is built to Eaton's Extra Heavy Duty grade, so it is aimed at the same industrial machinery and power distribution work but at a higher current and voltage class. Match the NEMA configuration at the receptacle before specifying, since a 50A device will not mate with a 30A locking receptacle.
6) Is the Leviton 28W76 locking plug OK to use outdoors or in a washdown area?
It carries Leviton Wetguard and Dustguard protection, which is built to resist moisture intrusion and keep dust and debris off the internal contacts. That covers damp and dusty industrial floors, generator hookups and temporary power. For direct outdoor exposure, the enclosure or cord cap arrangement still has to suit the location per your inspector.
7) Is this plug rated for industrial machinery or is it only a commercial grade device?
Industrial grade. Leviton builds this locking plug to Industrial Grade standards, which is the tier an MRO or plant electrician wants for machine cords, generator tie-ins and heavy-duty facility distribution rather than the lighter commercial devices.
8) Will this 30A plug hold up on a machine cord that gets dragged and vibrates?
That is what the twist-lock design is for. The polarized locking blades hold the mating connection so it resists accidental disconnection under vibration or cord strain, which is the usual failure mode on portable machinery and generator feeds. If you need a still heavier duty cord end at higher amperage, Eaton's 7765 armored locking plug is rated 50A 600V with back-wiring.
9) Is the Eaton 7411-C a substitute for the Leviton locking plug on a 480V machine feed?
No. The Eaton 7411-C Safety Grip locking plug is rated 20A at 120/208V and is built to Heavy-Duty Specification Grade. The Leviton 28W76 is a 30A, 480V 3-phase, 4-wire 3-pole L16-30P device carrying an Industrial grade rating. The Eaton is a lower-voltage, lower-amperage device and is the right call for 120/208V cord ends, not for a 480V machine feed.
10) For a 20A two-pole job, does Leviton offer it or do I go to another brand?
Leviton covers it within the same industrial locking plug family: alongside the 30-amp 3-pole 28W76, there is a 20-amp 2-pole version under Leviton part number 2341. If you would rather specify Eaton, the 7411-C Safety Grip locking plug is a 20A device at 120/208V in Heavy-Duty Specification Grade. Choose based on the receptacle configuration already installed, since 20A locking blade patterns differ by voltage class.
11) If I want a commercial-grade plug rather than industrial, what are my options?
The Leviton 28W76 is built to Industrial grade with Wetguard and Dustguard protection. If the application calls for a lighter-duty specification, the Eaton L6-30 locking plug is listed at Commercial grade with a nylon body in a two-pole three-wire L6-30 configuration. Note the two are not electrically interchangeable - the Eaton is a single-phase L6-30 device, while the Leviton is 480V 3-phase L16-30P - so the grade choice only applies if your opening is already an L6-30.
12) Why is this locking plug yellow, and does the color mean anything electrically?
The yellow housing is for visibility on the plant floor and job site, not a code color for voltage. Identify the device by its NEMA L16-30P blade configuration and the 480V 3-phase 30A rating, not by the housing color.
13) How does a non-metallic locking plug compare to the Leviton for wet or dusty industrial areas?
The Bryant 71020NP is a 7 Series non-metallic locking plug, so the body is a non-conductive housing. The Leviton 28W76 uses a high-visibility yellow housing with Wetguard moisture resistance and Dustguard protection against dust and debris, and is rated Industrial grade. If the deciding factor is moisture and dust intrusion on a 480V 3-phase feed, the Leviton is the device built around those two protections; the Bryant is a different configuration family and should be matched to its own receptacle before use.
