The core is galvanized steel, helically wound, with a black jacket over it. That steel core is what separates liquidtight flexible METALLIC conduit from the nonmetallic type: it gives you mechanical protection and a metal raceway, where the nonmetallic version is plastic only.

Liquidtight flexible metal conduit is built for exactly that: the jacket over the galvanized steel core keeps water and oil out of the raceway, which is why it is the standard choice for rooftop A/C whips, pump connections, and damp mechanical rooms. The black jacket is the general purpose version rather than a sunlight-specific or high-temperature compound, so for long-term direct UV exposure confirm the jacket rating against the job spec.

Plan on pulling an equipment grounding conductor. Liquidtight flexible metal conduit is only permitted as the equipment ground in limited short-length, low-ampacity cases, and most inspectors and job specs want a separate green conductor in the raceway. The steel core gives you mechanical protection either way.
