There is a galvanized steel core under the black jacket, which is what makes it liquid tight flexible metallic conduit (LFMC) rather than the non-metallic type. The steel core gives it crush resistance and a metal raceway; the black outer jacket handles the liquid tight seal.

Use the metallic type, like this 1/2 inch LTZUS02B-L, where you want a steel core for physical protection and a metal raceway on vibrating equipment such as motors, compressors, and rooftop units. Liquid tight flexible non-metallic conduit is lighter and cheaper to pull but has no steel armor, so it is the choice where crush and impact risk is low. Either way, run a separate equipment grounding conductor unless the fittings and conduit combination is approved for grounding.
