Master Lock 410KD-BLK – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a Master Lock 410 safety padlock fit through a lockout hasp and a breaker lockout device?
The shackle on the 410 is 1/4 inch (6mm) diameter with 1-1/2 inch (38mm) of vertical clearance and 25/32 inch between the legs. That 1/4 inch diameter is what most group lockout hasps, breaker lockout devices and valve lockouts are drilled for, and the 1-1/2 inch clearance gives you room to stack it on a hasp with other workers' locks. If your hasp holes are smaller than 1/4 inch, this one won't pass.
2) Can I use the Master Lock 410 padlock on electrical lockout where the lock could touch a live part?
That is what it was built for. The 410 body is Zenex thermoplastic, which is non-conductive as well as lightweight, and the lock is made exclusively for lockout tagout work rather than general security. Electricians doing breaker and disconnect lockout are the main users.
3) Do the different colors of the Master Lock 410 mean different keying, or is it just color?
Color is just color. The 410 comes in black, blue, green, orange, purple, yellow and red, and shops normally assign a color per trade, per shift or per department so you can see at a glance whose lock is on the hasp. Keying is handled separately, and these are supplied keyed different so each person carries their own key.
4) Is the Master Lock 410 key retaining, and why does that matter for LOTO?
It is key retaining, meaning the key cannot be pulled out while the shackle is open. Nobody can hang the lock on a hasp unlocked and walk away with the key, which is exactly the failure mode an energy control program is trying to eliminate. It also supports the one employee, one lock, one key rule.
5) Can I have my Master Lock 410 safety padlocks keyed alike or master keyed across a facility?
The 410 uses a 6-pin tumbler cylinder that is master keyed capable, so a facility can run a supervisor master over individual locks. As supplied, these are keyed different, which is the standard setup for LOTO because every worker needs a unique key. Keyed alike sets are generally only used where one person applies several locks to the same job.
6) Will a locksmith be able to cut keys for the Master Lock 410 on a standard Master Lock keyway?
No. The 410 uses a high security, reserved for safety cylinder, meaning the keyway is restricted to safety padlocks and is not shared with general purpose Master Lock padlocks. That is deliberate, so a shop key or a spare from the toolbox can never open a lockout lock.
7) Is the Master Lock 410 the right lock for a gate, locker or storage cage?
Use something else. The 410 is made exclusively for lockout tagout, with a thermoplastic body chosen for light weight and non-conductivity rather than cutting or prying resistance. For gates, cages and outdoor storage you want a laminated steel or solid body padlock with a hardened shackle. Keeping safety padlocks off general security duty is also part of the point, since the reserved cylinder only works if those locks stay on energy isolation.
8) How big is the Master Lock 410 padlock body?
The body measures 1-1/2 inches (38mm) wide and 1-3/4 inches (44mm) tall. That is the compact size in the safety padlock range, which keeps it manageable when six or eight of them are stacked on one group hasp, and it clips easily to a belt for a full shift.
9) How do I identify which worker a Master Lock 410 padlock belongs to?
The 410 takes permanent write-on labels, so you can mark a name, department or work order on-site without ordering custom stamping. Combined with the seven body colors, that covers most identification schemes a safety manager needs.
10) How are Master Lock 410 safety padlocks packed for a facility order?
They come six to a shelf pack and 36 to a master carton. For MRO buyers stocking a crib, the six pack maps neatly to a crew, and the 36 carton covers a mid-size plant standardizing one color per department.
