Either backset works. The WL04 passage lever ships with a six-way adjustable latch that sets to 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch, so you don't have to measure the backset before ordering. The same latch handles a square corner faceplate, a rounded corner faceplate, or a drive-in installation, which covers the three preps you'll find on an existing residential door.

No key, no lock. The WL04 is a passage function lever, meaning both levers always retract the latch and there is no cylinder, no button, and no thumbturn. It's for a hall or closet door where you only need the latch to hold the door shut. If you need the door to lock from inside for a bedroom or bath, you need a privacy set instead, and if it needs to key, an entry set.

Grade 3 is the residential duty level, and that is what the WL04 Wave lever is built to. For in-unit closet and hall doors in an apartment it's a reasonable fit. For corridors, offices, or anything with tenant and public traffic, step up: the Hager 2510 passage lever is Grade 2, and the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage lock. Buildings that need a fire rated opening should look at the Falcon K101, which carries a fire rating.

The WL04 is a bored cylindrical lever, which is the standard 2-1/8 inch cross bore prep on nearly every interior residential door, and its latch adjusts to whichever of the two common backsets (2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch) the door was drilled for. It also handles a square or round corner latch faceplate, or a drive-in latch with no faceplate at all, so you're not matching the old latch's mortise. What it will not do is fill a mortise lock pocket or a five-inch center-to-center handle set prep.

Don't. The WL04 is a Grade 3 residential passage set, and a rated opening needs hardware carrying a fire rating in its own listing. Among passage levers, the Falcon K101 is Grade 1 with a fire rating and covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 fire rated passage/closet lever for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. Either of those is the right direction for a rated corridor or stairwell door.

No handing to specify on the WL04. It's a passage set with a lever on each side and no keyed cylinder, so one part number covers a left hand or right hand door. Pick the finish and install it. Half dummy levers are the ones where handing matters, and those are ordered by hand, like the Baldwin Estate 5103 which comes as a separate left hand and right hand part.

A passage lever like the Master Lock WL04 has a working latch: turn the lever, the latch retracts, and the door stays shut on its own between uses. A dummy lever is a fixed pull screwed to the face of the door with no latch and no mechanism at all, used on an inactive door of a pair or a door held closed by a ball catch or magnet. If your closet door has a strike plate in the jamb, you want a passage set. If it's a bi-fold or a door with a roller catch, a dummy such as the BEST 7KC Series single dummy trim is the correct part.

The main thing to settle before you standardize is lever style and finish, since that's what the tenant sees on every door.

If you're after an entry lever with a deadbolt in one package, the Callan Bennett is a Grade 3 entrance leverset and deadbolt combo. For an entry lever on its own at a similar duty level, the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.
